Essay Question
In a well written essay (5+ paragraphs), respond to the following prompt. Remember to use the
outlining method that we practiced in class.
The period of Reconstruction (1865 – 1877) was characterized, in part, by a great extension of
political and civil rights to African Americans. However, many of these rights were taken away
as a system of segregation was set up that would last until the Civil Rights movement of the
1950's and 1960's.
Why did Reconstruction come to an end in 1877? Be sure to discuss at least three factors leading
to the end of Reconstruction.
