LEVEL ONE DIRECTIONS: Read the passage “Two Ways of Life” on pages 354 and 355 of your textbook. Draw a picture depicting each way of life described in the passage. DARE: Don’t have any straight lines in your drawing. Nomads: Pictures might include tents, people moving around from place to place, and herds of farm animals such as cows, sheep, and goats Townspeople: Pictures may include houses, markets, merchants, and farming When you are done drawing, answer the following questions. 1. What is a caravan? 2. How did townspeople and nomads rely on each other? The nomads brought in goods from the desert, such as herbs for medicine, that the townspeople couldn’t get otherwise. The townspeople provided the nomads with sturdier clothes and cooking supplies. 3. Why did the townspeople settle in oases? And oasis is an area of water and fertile land in the desert, they settled here in order to farm and produce food without having to move around like the nomads 4. How did these settlements impact early Arabian life? Early settlements became centers of trade, which became large cities, these centers were connected by trade routes which provided different peoples the ability to spread goods as well as religions and ideas. When Muhammad was growing up the tradition was for the wealthy in his society to help provide for the poor and unfortunate, however as he became a man this practice declined as the wealthy wanted to keep their money. Muhammad was worried because although he was wealthy himself, he still believed that their community should provide for one another 2. What is the difference between the terms “Islam” and “Muslim”? Islam is the name of the religion, Muslim is the name for the group of people who follow Islam 3. What do Muslims believe happened to Muhammad? Who do they believe he was? Muslims believe that while Muhammad was meditating one day, he was visited by an angel, who gave him a message from Allah (or God). Muhammad was then charged with memorizing dozens of messages throughout his lifetime and sharing these messages with others 4. What is the Qur’an and what does it contain? The Qur’an is a holy book of Islam and contains the messages from Allah that Muhammad received during his life 5. What are TWO reasons that the early Arabs were reluctant to accept the teaching of Muhammad? First, the early Arabians didn’t want to accept Islam because they were polytheistic and according to the teachings of Muhammad there was only one God. Second, in the current tradition there was a yearly pilgrimage to Kaaba which provided the merchants lots of opportunity for trade and they did not want to give this up. Third, one of Muhammad’s teachings was that by embracing Islam one would be accepted into a community where rich and poor were equal, and the wealthy Arabians did not want to lose their power over the poor. After Muhammad fled to Medina, he converted many people there, and the people fought Mecca for political and religious control. Medina won the fight and the people of Mecca embraced Islam. After that, Islam spread through a combination effort of wars, missionaries and trade. Because most Muslims at the time lived in Arabia, which traded with Africa, Europe, and Asia, they were able to spread their religion without violence through trading their goods as well as their beliefs on trade routes, which then got spread throughout the world 8. Muslims learn how to behave from the Sunnah, it’s a model for how to live and be dutiful 3. Which of the five pillars of Islam shows how Muslims are supposed to treat each other? The third pillar of Islam has to do with how to treat other people, it states that Muslims should give aid and money to the poor and needy 4. Why do Muslims fast during Ramadan? For Muslims, fasting is a way to prove that Allah is more important than their own body. Ramadan is believed to be the month in which Muhammad first began receiving messages from Allah, which made it holy. So for this whole month Muslims do not eat or drink between dawn and sunset 5. What is the hajj? The hajj is a pilgrimage, or journey, to Mecca to a structure known as the Kaaba. Each Muslim is required by the fifth and final pillar of Islam to make this journey at least once in their lives 6. Which of the five pillars of Islam do you think would be most difficult to perform? Shariah is a system of Islamic laws that judges the rightness of actions, these have changed over time and continue to change with interpretations of the Qur’an and Sunnah 8.
