At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
 Define computer system
Overview of Computer Systems
These devices are examples of computer hardware.
A computer system needs to have hardware to function.
Define Computer System
Computer system is defined as a combination of components designed to
process data and store files.
It consists of 4 major hardware components :
 Input devices
 Output devices
 Processor
 Storage devices
Requires hardware, software and a user to fully function.
Software refers to a set of instructions that tell the hardware what to do.
Software can also have various other function such as performing computation,
communication with other software and human interaction.
User refers to a person who uses the computer for any purposes such as
work, business or entertainment.

Computer Hardware
Computer hardware consists of :
 Input devices
 Output devices
 Processor
 Storage devices
Input devices feed data or commands in a form that the computer can
use.
Examples of input devices are: keyboard, light pen, joystick, microphone,
mouse, video and digital camera.
The CPU is the example of a processor.
It has the same importance as the brain to human beings.
Output devices such as the monitor shows people the processed data or
information. This type of information can be understood and used by computer
users.
Other example of output devices are printers, plotters and speakers.
Storage usually means secondary storage. It consists of secondary
storage devices such as hard disk, floppy disk, diskettes, CD-ROM and DVDROM.
Computer Software
There are 2 types of computer software:
1. System Software
2. Application Software
System Software
Is any computer software that helps to run the computer system
It controls, integrates and manages the individual hardware
components of a computer system.
Computer User
Refers to the person who uses a computer for any purposes such as for
work, business or entertainment.
