5th Grade 4th Six Weeks
Exemplar Lesson 01: Changes over Time (11 days) Students will engage in
activities and learning that shows how the flow of rivers and lava,
precipitation (in the form of rain), wind, ice (glaciers), and barriers affect the
shape of the land over time through weathering and erosion. Exemplar
Lesson 02: Investigating the Past: Tree Rings (5 days). This lesson focuses
on tree rings. Students learn more about how the patterns of tree rings can
predict past events. Exemplar Lesson 03: Investigating the Past:
Sedimentary Rock (5 days) this lesson will still focus on investigating the
past by looking at rock sequences and fossils. During this lesson the rock
cycle will also be studied. Exemplar Lesson 04: Constructive and
Destructive Forces (5 days) this lesson will focus on constructive and
destructive forces that occur on the Earth’s surface. Students will review the
processes of weathering, erosion and deposition. Exemplar Lesson 01:
Objects in the Sky - Solar System (6 days) Students will learn about gravity
and how it influences the Sun, Earth, and planets in our solar system.
Students will review the order of the planets but most importantly, they will
learn that the force of gravity is what keeps the planets in orbit. Students will
also learn why planets revolve around the Sun Exemplar Lesson 02: Moon
and the Earth (8 days) Students will learn more about cycles and how these
cycles help predict patterns such as seasons, day and night, phases of the
moon, and tides. Students will go into more detail about Earth and some of
the cycles that occur. Students will be able to see animated visuals and
pictures to help them understand these concepts. Students will also perform
kinesthetic activities to help them learn the concepts.
6th Grade 4th Six Weeks
Exemplar Lesson 01: From Parents to Offspring (3 days) Students will
witness a DNA extraction demonstration and explore traits of other students
in order to interpret the role of genes in inheritance. Exemplar Lesson 02:
Changes in Traits (5 days) Students will observe and identify how changes
occur over several generations through natural selection and selective
breeding. Exemplar Lesson 01: Characteristics, Needs, and Responses of
Organisms (5 days) Students will identify responses in organisms, plant and
animals, to internal and external stimuli. One lab on animals and one on
plants will give students practice in observing responses. Exemplar Lesson
02: Responding to the Environment (5 days) Students will identify
components of an ecosystem to which organisms respond. Students will
connect how an organism’s ability to respond affects its survival.
7th Grade 4th Six Weeks
Exemplar Lesson 02: Potential and Kinetic Energy (4 days) this lesson will
focus on illustrating examples of potential and kinetic energy in everyday
life. Exemplar Lesson 03: Simple Machines (8 days) this lesson will focus
on the basic relationship between force and motion. Activities involving
each of the simple machines and their efficiency are included. Simple
calculation of work done will be addressed Exemplar Lesson 01:
Unbalanced Forces and Motion (4 days) This lesson will focus on Newton’s
First Law of Motion, which states that an object will remain at rest or move
in a constant speed and in a straight line if it is not subjected to an
unbalanced force. Exemplar Lesson 01: Length of Day and Reasons for the
Seasons (4 days) Most objects in our solar system have a regular and
predictable motion such as rotation, revolution, and orbits. These predictable
motions explain such phenomena such as day, night, and phases of the
moon, eclipses, tides, meteor showers, and comets. This lesson will address
changes from day to night, as well as seasonal changes due to the tilt of the
Earth. Exemplar Lesson 02: Motion of the Earth and Moon (4 days) these
predictable motions explain such phenomena such as day, night, and phases
of the moon, eclipses, tides, meteor showers and comets. This lesson will
address moon phase changes, as well as solar and lunar eclipses caused by
the tilt of the Earth’s and moon’s orbits.
