Virtual Frog Dissection
Purpose:

To learn the about the systems and organs of animals
Materials:



Pins
Scissors

Wax Tray
Probe
Frog
Procedure:
o Examine the external anatomy of the frog and name all of the parts. To begin the
dissection, place the frog on its back and pin down the limbs. Cut open the
underside of the frog and pin back the skin. You will also have to cut through the
muscle and pin it down, but do not cut too far, otherwise you may damage the
organs located below. Once pinned back, note the different structures under the
external skin, and how they fit together. Next, cut along the jaw and find the
different parts used in respiratory and digestive functions. See how they lead to
the organs in the center of the frog. Note each system (circulatory, digestive,
endocrine, immune, integumentary, immune, lymphatic, musculoskeletal,
nervous, reproductive, respiratory, and urinary). All of the systems work
together, and you can see them specifically when dissecting.
Conclusion:
o Virtually dissecting a frog was a very interesting experience. We learned a lot
about the frog’s body and how it all works together. We got to learn about the
organ systems and how they form an organism. Each of the organisms systems is
vital to its survival. The circulatory system is used to pump blood through the
blood vessels and the heart, which delivers oxygen. The digestive system
processes and digests nutrients using salivary glands, the stomach, liver,
gallbladder, pancreas, rectum, anus, and intestines. The immune system fights
off diseases; the endocrine system communicates within the body using
hormones and other glands. The integumentary system is made up of skin, hair,
and nails, and protects from outside sources. Structures that transfer lymph
between tissues and the blood stream are part of the lymphatic system. Organs
that can be used for breathing are part of the respiratory system. The nervous
system includes our brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The reproductive system
gives us a way to create new organisms and the musculoskeletal system holds all
of our muscles and bones that make up our bodies. Lastly, the urinary system
holds our kidneys, bladder and other parts to extract urine. These are all
important parts of our bodies and we noticed many differences and similarities
between the human functions and frogs.
About Organs and Systems:

Frogs as well as humans are made up of organs and have different systems that help
them survive

The main systems include:
o circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, integumentary, immune, lymphatic,
musculoskeletal, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, and urinary

Together all of the systems keep living things alive

A few of the differences between frogs and humans include:
o Humans have a 4 chamber heart and frogs have a 3 chamber
o Frogs are exothermic and humans are endothermic
o Frogs’ skin is part of their respiratory system

Some similarities are:
o Frogs have many of the same organs and we are both vertebrates
