Symbiosis/Species Interactions Project
General Biology 101
Purpose: To explore in further detail examples of a particular form of symbiosis to share
with other students in small group interactions.
Due Date: 15 April, 2009
Point Value: 5 points – allocated only for students that turn in their work in class on
Wednesday and participate in the group sharing activity, otherwise only partial credit will
be allowed if work comes in without group interaction.
Approach: Your instructor will assign you a topic (see listing for class members below).
You should read the associated material in your textbook (Chapter 46) in detail to gain an
understanding and perspective on your assigned topic. Note any examples (including in
the photos and captions) related to your topic from the textbook.
Research Phase: Following your initial reading, you are expected to investigate further,
using Internet or library sources to look into other material related to your topic. You are
expected to find a minimum of three examples.
Report: You will bring to class on 4/15/09 a typed one page report which will include
the following:
 1 brief paragraph describing the type of symbiosis that you are reporting on.
 On the same report list out the three examples of such species interactions, all
of these must be different than those listed in the text (use a bulleted format).
 Provide one photo or image of organisms involved in this type of interaction,
ideally they would be together in this image, but it is not absolutely required.
Your image should be approximately ¼ of the page size, so be sure to obtain a
good resolution quality image. Color is not required but encouraged.
 Provide MLA or APA formatting to any captured information, captions to
photos etc. You must give credit to the author or photographer on such a
report or it is considered plagiarism and you will not gain credit for this
assignment. Cite your sources.
 Make a one sentence comment about if human beings engage in this type of
symbiosis with any organisms. In some cases you may need to stretch your
imagination, it may not be apparent or in text form in your sources. This is an
“application” of what you have learned.
 Don’t forget to place a title and your name on the top of your report.
