Strategies for
this lesson
Teacher Inquiry/ Q and A
Modeling/Demonstrating
(Teacher will introduce chapter 4 by
explaining the difference between
weather and climate and showing
with a globe, how climate is
influenced.)
Teacher Led Discussion and
Pair/Share
Teacher will review climate, then
introduce the concept of community
interactions using notes and
discussion. Students will start a
symbiosis activity.)
Pair/Share
(Teacher will review the types of
symbiosis, then students will
regroup and finish the symbiosis
activity.)
Independent Work
(Students will go to the library and
research the major biomes so they

laws of nature govern energy flow and chemical cycling
in ecosystems.
Tues.
All students will be able to illustrate 5 examples of how
human activities now dominate most chemical cycles on
Earth.
Wed
All students will be able to recall and apply basic ecology
concepts learned throughout the past 3 weeks and score
a 90 or better on a formal test.

Assessment
I Direct Instruction
Discovery Learning
(Teacher will give notes and explain the
concepts of energy flow and chemical
cycling. Students will then perform an
activity involving analyzing a case study
on nutrient cycling in the Hubbard Brook
experimental forest.)
Teacher Inquiry/Q and A
Flex Grouping
(Students will be paired off and each
group given a specific environmental
issue such as Acid Rain, Global Warming,
etc… Each group must illustrate the
problem, cause, result, and possible
solutions to their issue. Each group will
give presentations to the whole class
Independent Work
(This is part 2 of an Ecology Unit (5
chapter) test. This test focuses entirely of
applications of concepts and involves
critical thinking and higher level skills.)
FormativeRandom Response, Journaling
Independent Work
(This is the conclusion of an Ecology Unit
(5 chapter) test. Students must complete
part 2 and also do essays on specific
topics.)
