 Have them study their multiplication facts at home EVERY night.
Cool Ways to Study
1. Play “Around the World” with your family.
2. Use flash cards and have a sibling quiz them.
3. Challenge your child to a multiplication face off. See how many facts they can write down in
one minute.
 Have them practice identifying what a number is divisible by everywhere they see
numbers (on road, in the store, on television, newspaper, etc…)
o This will enhance their knowledge of factors and helps with long division.
 Help your child with their number sense.

What is an Even number?


What is an Odd number?


Even numbers can be divided into groups of 2 with NO remainder. All even
numbers have a 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 in the ones place.
Odd number cannot be divided into groups of 2 with NO remainder; there is
always an “odd man” out.
What is a prime number? Prime numbers only have 2 numbers (factors) you can
multiple in the world to get that number. Ex. 2 = 1 x 2, 3 = 1 x 3; 23 =1 x 23

What is a composite number?

Composite numbers have more than 2 numbers (factors) you can multiple in the
world to get that number.
Ex. 4 = 1x 4 & 2 x 2 (3 factors); 15 = 1 x 15 & 3 x 5 (4 factors)

What is a perfect square number? The product (answer to a multiplication
problem) of a number times itself.

1x1=1
4 x 4 = 16
7 x 7 = 49
10 x 10 = 100
2x2=4
5 x 5 = 25
8 x 8 = 64
11 x 11 = 121
3x3=9
6 x 6 = 36
9 x 9 = 81
12 x 12 = 144
Make certain your child can factor a number to only its primes (PRIME FACTORIZATION).
o This skill will promise your child success with finding the greatest common factor (GCF),
least common multiple (LCM) and simplifying fractions.
Hint: Memorize the Important Prime Numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19
How to do Prime Factorization
1. Place the number on top.
2. Draw two tree branches.
3. Write down two factors (Never 1) that equal that number when multiplied together.
4. Break down each number under the branch until you get to the primes.
5. Circle all of the prime numbers.
6. Write an equation by setting your number equal to the product of prime numbers.
Hint: To write the prime factorization using exponents, just count how many you have of each prime
and place a small number at the top.
