Unit 6: Civil War Times
Compacted Unit
ABC Book of The Civil War
Directions: You will create an ABC book about the Civil War. You may
choose how you would like your book to be bound, but it must be put
together neatly. Each page must include a title, page number, and
picture (a drawing, printed picture, a copied photo from a book, etc.).
1. Design a decorative cover. You must include a title, name, and a picture
depicting the times of The Civil War. Be creative!
2. Table of Contents - Create a table of contents. You must include the
title of each assignment and its corresponding page #. (Ex: “A” pg. 1)
3. Assignments:
A – Abraham Lincoln – Research Abraham Lincoln. Write a one-page
article about his contributions to the United States. Be sure to
specifically include his contributions during the Civil War.
B – Battles – Create a battle chart of the major battles fought during
the Civil War. The battles that should be included are Bull Run, Battle
at Antietam, and Battle of Gettysburg. You should tell where they
took place, the date that they occurred, and the outcome of each
battle.
C – Confederacy – Research the Confederate States of America.
Write a paragraph describing their views on slavery as well as the
advantages and disadvantages of the war.
D – Divided Nation – Research sectionalism and how it divided the
people of the United States. What did Thomas Jefferson feel would
happen to the United States if the split continued?
E – Emancipation Proclamation – Research the Emancipation
Proclamation. Discuss the affect it had on the Northern and
Southern states.
F – Fight for the Presidency – What was the outcome of the election
of 1860? How did this outcome affect the North and the South?
G – Gettysburg Address – What was the Gettysburg address? Who
gave the Gettysburg Address? Why did he/she give the address?
What were its effects on the union soldiers?
H – Harriet Beecher Stowe – How did Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel,
Uncle Tom’s Cabin, influence people’s views on slavery?
I – Influential People – Research Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglass,
and Sojourner Truth. Write a paragraph about each person
describing the role he/she played in helping free the slaves.
J – Juneteenth – Explain what this holiday is and why it is celebrated.
K – Kansas/Nebraska Act – What was this act? How did this act
change the rules of the Missouri Compromise?
L – Leadership – Compare and contrast Confederate General Robert E.
Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
M – Missouri Compromise – What was this compromise? Why was it
formed? What impact did it have on Missouri and Maine?
N – Northern Views – Why were they against slavery? What were
advantages and disadvantages did they have in the war?
O – Order of Events – Create a timeline of events by placing the
following events in order in which they occurred.
*Abraham Lincoln is elected President
*Lee surrenders at Appomattox
*Congress passes the Kansas-Nebraska Act
*The Civil War begins
*The Emancipation Proclamation is issued
* Congress passes the Missouri Compromise
P – Pickett’s Charge – Who was Pickett? What order did General
Robert E. Lee give him during the Battle of Gettysburg? What was
his strategy? Was the strategy successful? Why or why not?
Q – Quotes – Write each quote and who said each.
1. “There is nothing left for me to do but go and see General
Grant, and I would rather die a thousand deaths.”
2. “I beg to present you as a Christmas gift the city of
Savannah.”
3. “Our Federal Union – it must and shall be preserved!”
4. “I never lost a single passenger.”
5. “For score and seven years ago…”
R – Road to Appomattox – Describe how the Civil War came to an end.
S – Slavery in the South – Why was slavery seen as necessary by the
people in the Southern states? Give specific examples of why they
needed slaves.
T – Tragedy – Describe the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. What
impact did it have on the nation?
U – Underground Railroad – What was the Underground Railroad?
Explain how it helps slaves gain their freedom. Name specific people,
events, etc. that made the Underground Railroad a success.
V – Vocabulary – Define the following vocabulary words: sectionalism,
free state, slave state, emancipation, underground, fugitive,
abolitionists, secede, Confederacy, address.
W – Women Work for Change – Write about the following women:
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Clara Barton, Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Why were they important during this time, what specific things did
they work for, etc.?
X – X-tra! Read all about it! – Create a poster for one of the
presidential candidates from the election of 1860.
Y – Years of Uncertainty – Write the following years in order: 1860,
1820, 1862, 1854, 1861, 1865, 1863. Why was each year important to
the Civil War (write the significant event/happening)?
Z – Zealous Armies – Create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting
the Union Army and Confederate Army. Give specific similarities and
differences between the two armies.
