Completed Equivalent Fractions Target Skills: Objective 09/16/09: • Use fractions to find the fraction length of a whole. Consider the size of the whole when comparing fractions 1. LAUNCH (Day 5 - 10 minutes) A fraction is a part of a whole. The two parts of a fraction called the numerator and the denominator play important roles. The denominator is the total amount. It is like the last name of a brother and sister that have the same parents. The mother, father and children all have the same last name. Their last name tells you that they belong to the same family. Their first names tell who they are in the family. The numerator is like the first names of the members of the family. The numerator tells you how many out of the total are represented. 4/5 shapes are squares In this fraction there are a total of five shapes and four out of the five are squares. Because fractions belong to families you can find who is related by finding the lowest common factor between fractions. A factor is a whole number that divides into another number without leaving a remainder. Simplify the fraction by find the lowest common factor: 1/3 and 2/6 Look at the denominators. What factors do both numbers share? What numbers can be divided into both? 1. Divide the common factor into the larger denominator 2. Use the quotient to divide the numerator and denominator of the larger fraction. These families are called equivalent fractions. The word Targets Do Now (3 minutes): What is 425 x 15? equivalent means equal in value. Equivalent fractions describe the same amount. To create an equivalent fraction multiply the fraction by a fraction form of 1. The number 1 can be written as a fraction by writing the same number over itself. 5/5 or 4/4 2. EXPLORE (20 minutes) Targeted Resources Fraction Strips Take your fraction strips and try to find as many fraction families as you can. When you find a family member write a string of fractions to show their equal value. 1/3 = 3/6 3. SUMMARIZE (5 minutes) Targeted Resources Is 2/12 the same as 4/24? How can you be sure? 4.
