EARTH SCIENCES – WEATHERING
-Difference between weather (NOUN) and weather (VERB)
1) NOUN - the state of the atmosphere with respect to heat or cold, wetness or dryness,
calm or storm, clearness or cloudiness
2) VERB – process that breaks down rocks into smaller and smaller fragments
-Ex: -causes potholes
-turns mountains to hills
-creates canyons
-2 types of weathering
1) Mechanical Weathering
-breaks apart rocks without changing there chemical composition
-caused by:
-PLANTS
-ICE
2) Chemical Weathering
-chemical composition of the rock changes when water, air and other substances react
with minerals in the rocks
-caused by:
-WATER
-ACIDS
-OXYGEN
-Effects of climate on weathering
-cold weather – more mechanical weathering from ice
-warm, wet weather – more chemical weathering from water
WEATHERING CHALK EXPERIMENT
Background - Chalk is a type of limestone made of shells of tiny organisms
-mechanical weathering – when you draw on the board or sidewalk
Experiment – show chemical weathering of chalk
