LAB: VOLCANO MAPPING
OBJECTIVES
In this lab, you will map the location of some of Earth’s volcanoes.
You will discover the relationship between the movement of tectonic
plates and volcanic eruptions.
PROCEDURE
Examine the table below. It shows the locations of 20 active
volcanoes. Find each volcano location and mark it on the world
map in OneNote.
You can use the website: http://www.gps-coordinates.org/ to
help you find the locations (make sure you type them in
correctly).

Compare the locations you marked to the boundaries of the tectonic plates.
What patterns do you notice? What is the relationship between tectonic plate
boundaries and volcanoes?

Why are some volcanoes located far from tectonic plate boundaries? How
are these volcanoes different from the volcanoes located at plate boundaries?

Most of the volcanoes you mapped are in an area called “The Ring of Fire.”
These volcanoes are caused by subduction. How do these volcanoes
compare with volcanoes found at divergent plate boundaries?
