PROGRAM
The Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) is one of the largest distributors and retailers of beverage alcohol in Canada,
generating a net income of approximately $935.2 million on annual sales of approximately $3.1 billion. The Branch
operates approximately 200 retail stores across the province, oversees the operations of Rural Agency Stores and has
the role of wholesaler to approximately 700 private liquor retail outlets and 8,000 licensed establishments.
The LDB is a unique government entity that operates with similar independence to a Crown Corporation under the
direction of a General Manager and CEO.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Senior Network Operator ensures IT infrastructure services are available to the business and supports multiple and
varied branch wide systems operations across multiple platforms and program areas. The position ensures adherence to
operational processes, and technologies necessary to maximize IT infrastructure availability through proactive monitoring,
and automated resolutions for business infrastructure processes.
The position ensures the installation, maintenance and repair of application software and supports and maintains system
configuration & operational processes for the branch’s backup and recovery systems.
The Senior Network Operator plays a key role in automated systems management including developing, scripting and
coding operational processes and documenting procedures and develops and maintains the procedures necessary for
branch wide operational support. This position also maintains a centralized automated operational management
resolution system and associated processes.
NATURE OF WORK AND POSITION LINKS
To accomplish objectives, the position develops and maintains productive working relationships with:
IT Management: presents graphs and ad-hoc reporting for trending, capacity measurement analysis etc.
IT Support Services: works with Support Centre in the tracking of automated alerts and how they should be tracked
and classified as well as resolution approaches
IT Release Management: Implementation of change to production infrastructure

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES / DELIVERABLES
1. Support the LDB's network and support division facilities which houses computers, printers and network
communications devices.
a. monitors all systems on an ongoing basis to ensure stable performance levels
b. runs system backups in keeping with established schedules and updates appropriate logs
c. maintains security within the Production Services Centre
d. takes responsibility for completion/recovery of scheduled and requested production jobs
e. monitors communication network operation across LDB and its connection to ITSD
2. Provides system and network support maintenance services.
a. investigates data integrity problems and application failures and initiates/coordinates problem resolving
actions
b. provides service to diagnose/resolve application and/or network operating problems
c. initiates Problem Action Reports documenting all system failures, actions taken/recommended
d. in communication with Supervisor, Technical Support, Application Developers, Outside Contractors on
application services and systems problems and plan/activate corrective action
e. ensures user clients are notified concerning circumstances affecting production schedules and
plans/recommends operational alternatives
3. Supports hardware and software applications on mainframe UNIX/Linus and WAN/LAN operations and monitors
status of infrastructure systems.
a. organizes and initializes tapes and cartridges and backup and restore and archive data as per schedule
b. supports UNIX/Linux,WAN and LAN support to facilitate day-to-day operating needs and coordinate/process
major production tasks
c. maintains and updates system checklists, system passwords, LAN user lists and group lists
d. logs, prints and distributes business records
e. operates tape libraries and peripheral equipment
f. answers general and technical inquiries and resolves user hardware/software network problems through
problem analysis and decision making
4. Provides systems management to a variety of platforms.
a. initializes tapes and disk packs for complex and diverse back up systems
b. creates and maintains complex production back-up schedules
c. organizes the archiving of auditable forms, logs, and statistics on a monthly and yearly basis
d. researches and performs the restoration of files from backup tapes
e. requisitions and maintains stock inventory for operations section
f. maintains a tape library with organized off-site storage
g. downloads data from tapes to system disks
h. performs system maintenance routines according to schedule
i. performs shut down and start up of all systems platforms
5. Provides hardware, software, network and applications support to client users in the LDB’s province wide retail
network.
a. assists users in the operation of applications used to generate and transmit business reports (e.g. sales,
inventory, financial, etc.)
b. troubleshoots systems problems over the phone and guides users in solving the problem (e.g. reloading
software or clearing printer jams)
c. responds to user questions on hardware configuration and software operation
d. responds to hardware and software failures by analyzing problems and resolving over the phone, conducting
site visits or contacting responsible support agency, if required
e. provides instruction and assistance to users requiring basic set up and systems maintenance
f. consults with Tier 2 the IT Technical Services groups on technical issues beyond front line challenges
g. delivers on-site systems training/orientation to new or current users
h. creates maintains operational schedules and Branch systems documentation
6. Performs other duties.
a. provides, as required, support to the LDB's Help Desk including after hours assistance
b. provides "hands on" technical assistance (equipment setup, cabling, etc.) and assists users in the operation of
LDB network communications operational initiatives

Scrutinizer, PathView, Observer, CISCO Works, Nortel Device Manager, CA NSM. etc.), server management tools (IBM
Director, HP Insight manager, IBM RSA, etc. ); storage management tools (IPStore & Tivoli Storage Manager, VRangerstorage subsystem specific tools, etc.), Security (Check Point management tool), VMware console management tool,
MarkVision print management, reverse proxy, SSO, OEM Grid Control, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This Senior Network Operator position is a 7X24 position. Currently this position is staffed,with rotating shifts, from
6:30am until 11:00pm Monday to Friday. Expansion towards 7X24 is expected in the near future.

Degree or Diploma of Information Technology or a related discipline in addition to 2 years recent* related work
experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience which includes formal Information Technology
courses related to telecommunication, combined with a minimum 4 years of recent* related work experience.
