Q3: Group 17 elements consist of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine. The
iodide ion with mass number 127 has 54 electrons. It follows that:
A. iodine has an atomic number of 53.
B. an iodide ion is a cation.
C. the iodide ion has 55 protons in its nucleus
D. an iodine atom has 73 neutrons in its nucleus.
Q4: Ernest Rutherford contributed to knowledge about the structure
of the atom by:
A. discovering the composition of alpha particles
B. discovering that protons are found in the nucleus of an atom
C. proving the existence of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
D. proposing that electrons move in circular orbits around the nucleus

Q6: Insert either INCREASE or DECREASE in the gaps to complete the sentences
a. As you move down a group the ionization energy will decrease, as you move
from right to left across a period the ionization energy will increase
b. As you move from left to right across a period the atomic radii of elements
will decrease, if you move down a group the atomic radii will increase
c. Justify your choices for the above statements
a. Ionisation energy is the energy required to remove an electron. As you move
down a group, the electrons (especially in the outer shell) are further away
from the nucleus, therefore they are easier to remove, they are further away
from the positive charge in the nucleus. From left to right, it increases as the
atoms get smaller, the electrons in the outer shell are closer to the nucleus, and
the number of protons increases, holding the electrons tighter.
b. Atomic radii is how wide an atom is, as you move down a group you add more
shell as the number of electrons increases, therefore the radii increases. From
left to right the atomic radii DECREASES due to the fact that there are more
protons in the nucleus, the same amount of shells. The electrons in the outer
shell get sucked in, making the atom smaller.
Q7: Describe how the following parts of an atom were discovered, and who they
were discovered by:
a. Electron
Thomson discovered the electron. Using the cathode ray tube and the magnet,
electrons were negatively charged and the atom looked like a ‘plum pudding’
b. positively charged nucleus
Rutherford, after firing alpha particles at thin gold foil, most passed through, some
were deflected. Like charges repel each other, so the positive alpha particles were
repelled by something positive – the nucleus (protons)
