WLHS / Bio / Monson / UNIT 8 – Viruses & Bacteria Pathogen Wanted Poster Research mini-Project For this mini-project, you be will be researching one of the pathogens in the list below and you will produce a "Wanted Poster." In this project, you will be working individually. You will be able to choose one of the pathogens below (or choose one off the list!). BE CREATIVE and have fun! Project Description: A. Make a wanted poster for one of the pathogens listed on the back. Poster is to be on a regular 8.5” x 11” piece of paper. A “mug shot” of your pathogen should appear on the front of the poster with a detailed description on the back (if you need more than one sheet of paper for the description, just staple second sheet to the poster). The poster should include: 1) “Mug shot” of the suspect (5 points) The photo can be hand drawn or a picture from the internet. If you use a photograph from the internet/book/magazine/etc.…you MUST cite the picture in your citations (where did you get it?); include a caption explaining why this pathogen is “wanted” 2) Description of the suspect (5 points) a. Is the suspect a bacteria, virus, or parasite? b. What does it physically look like? (i.e. under a microscope / electron microscope) (Identify key characteristics that will help someone identify it.) c. size? Kingdom / phylum / etc.? Identify key characteristics that would help someone identify it under a microscope. 3) Organism's mode of operation or m.o. (5 points) a. How does the suspect attack its victim? (How does one “get it”?) b. How does it spread from one person to another; or from host to victim? c. Does it have any “accomplices”? (other organisms that carry it around) 4) Most common victims to prey upon (5 points) a. Does it infect humans only? Other species? b. Are some individuals at greater risk than others? 5) “Hide out” of the culprit (5 points) a. Where is the suspect most likely to be found? (either in nature, as in a host, or which tissue/cell type in an infected patient) b. What body system(s) does the suspect affect? Are specific cells the target? 6) Most common injury done to victim (4 points) a. What are the symptoms of the victim? b. How does someone know if they have it? c. How is it diagnosed? 7) Is it considered armed and dangerous? (4 points) a. Rate the degree of damage caused? b. Is it lethal? Can it cause permanent damage or lifelong problems? c. How many days is a person typically sick? 8) Statistics: Number of victims per year, infection rates in different parts Of the world, which age group most affected, sex most affected, etc… (4 points) 9) Most effective weapons against the suspect? (4 points) a. Treatment for the disease, possible cure for the disease? B. You will need at least 4 sources listed in a bibliography & you will hand these in with your poster (1 of your sources may be your picture citation; use proper APA citation format!). (4 pts) C. TURNITIN.COM: Submit the written portion of the project to TURNITIN.COM. (5 points) **Remember to save your written portion as a Word doc, or in your google drive.
