Klug, Old Activity 4.1, Extensions of Mendelian Inheritance
Klug, NEW Activity 4.1 Extensions of Mendelian Inheritance
* In its revised format include Parts 4.1.1 through 4.1.7. These parts should be separated
from the original tutorial then combined to form this new tutorial, Activity 4.1. It will
have it's own Introduction, Summary, and Post-quiz.
* Remove the screen asking if the user wishes to take the quiz.
New organization:
Activity 4.1, Extensions of Mendelian Inheritance (old Part 4.1.1 through 4.1.7)
Introduction (Part 4.1.1)
-This will not be programmed as part of the Flash animation.
-This will be converted into an html page. It will use the image and text from
the second paragraph of Part 4.1.1 as the Introduction text. Modify this
paragraph to end with the sentence "In this Activity you will examine
variation on the simple Mendelian patterns: incomplete dominance & co
dominance; multiple alleles; and gene interactions."
-Delete the 1st paragraph and the last paragraph.
-The title over the image will read "Extensions of Mendelian Inheritance".
The balance of the text from 3.4.1 will be used in the animation.
Animation (Parts 4.1.2) Incomplete Dominance
-Remove all text references to "Click…" or "Play…"
-Throughout, remove all the sentences "Click the "Play" button to ..."
-Remove all stops between scenes. One scene will automatically move into
the next. Adjust the timing to allow a few second pause between each scene.
The narrative should scroll to match the action.
-Add the following scroll flags: P1, F1, and F2.
-Place a 2 or 3 second pause between the F1 and F2 scenes.
-This is the end of this segment. The exercise portion of 4.1.2 should be split
out into its own segment (see below).
Exercise (Part 4.1.2) Exercise: Incomplete Dominance
-This is self-contained.
Animation (Parts 4.1.3) Codominance
-Remove all text references to "Click…" or "Play…"
-Throughout, remove all the sentences "Click the "Play" button to ..."
-Remove all stops between scenes. One scene will automatically move into
the next. Adjust the timing to allow a few second pause between each scene.
The narrative should scroll to match the action.
-No scroll flags.
-This is the end of this segment.
Animation (Parts 4.1.4) Multiple Alleles
-The interactive element in the first scene of the old tutorial will be cut out
and made into a stand-alone interaction (see below). The first scene of the
revised animation will begin with the Bombay phenotype and the narrative
"The pedigree at the left depicts…"
-Remove all text references to "Click…" or "Play…"
-Remove all stops between scenes. One scene will automatically move into
the next. Adjust the timing to allow a few second pause between each scene.
The narrative should scroll to match the action.
-No scroll flags.
-This is the end of this segment.
Exercise (Part 4.1.4) Exercise: Multiple Alleles
-This is self-contained.
-This is the blood-type exercise cut out of the beginning of 4.1.4 (see above).
-Change the first line of the box to read: "Enter parental blood types for each
parent then press the button below."
Animation (Parts 4.1.5) Gene Interactions
-The second sentence of the 1st paragraph should be changed to read: "The
Bombay phenotype is one example of this."
-Delete the last sentence of the 2nd paragraph "We will examine the genetics
of squash…"
-Remove all text references to "Click…" or "Play…"
-The 2nd paragraph of the 2nd scene of the old version should now read: "This
is a Mendelian F1 cross of two squash plants with disc fruit phenotype. What
phenotypes and phenotypic ratios do you expect from this cross? Note that
the ratios are a variation of the expected 9:3:3:1 ration."
-Keep the 3 interactive buttons at the bottom of the Punnett square but do not
refer to them in the narrative.
-Remove all stops between scenes. One scene will automatically move into
the next. Adjust the timing to allow a few second pause between each scene.
The narrative should scroll to match the action.
-Delete the last paragraph that refers to the textbook: "Other examples of two
locus interactions…"
-No scroll flags.
Summary (Part 4.1.6)
-This will not be programmed as part of the Flash animation.
Post-quiz (Part 4.1.7)
-This will not be programmed as part of the Flash animation.
First Pass Comments from Eric Stavney 10/29/03
1. Let’s break out the last sentence of text on the Introductory Page into a new
paragraph. This sentence reads “In this Activity you will examine…” The text
feels heavy and chunky with the wide margins and this may help.
[Andy 10/29: Please make this correction.]
2. The text scrolling speed on 4.1.2 is too slow and needs to be sped up to our
standard speed. Pack a lunch!
[Andy 10/29: Please make this correction.]
3. There’s no scroll bar in 4.1.3 – let’s get it back in. Also, the graphics seem
relatively gigantic compared to other text within the graphics window elsewhere –
we can reduce this somewhat so it won’t crowd the scroll bar. Don’t forget scroll
flags when you put in the bar!
[Andy 10/29: Please make the correction to the scroll bar. I like the large text but the
superscript M and N can be reduced one or two points.]
LC 11/6/
This animation is set up that the superscript would be a pain to reduce.
Can you live with it.?
4. No scroll bar in 4.2.4 either, or scroll flags. I would wager the graphic needs to
be reduced in size to accommodate the scroll bar for an esthetic fit. Further more,
in places the labeling and caption font size is bigger than the title font size – we
want just the reverse.
[Andy 10/29: Please make the correction to the scroll bar. The graphic can also be
reduced a little. The first screen does dwarf the rest of the screens.]
5. In 4.2.4 somewhere in the scrolling text is the word “N-acetylgalactoseamine”. I
can’t scroll through to give you the exact location. I’m pretty sure this word is
spelled “N-acetylgalactosamine” without the extra “e”.
[Andy 10/29: Eric is correct about the spelling.]
6. In 4.1.5 there is no scroll bar or scroll flags. We need ‘em!
[Andy 10/29: Please make this correction.]
7. In 4.1.5 the leader arrows point somewhere on the vegetables in the picture but
because the lines are not black and don’t extend in front of the photo, they have
no clear termini. Please redo the pointers.
[Andy 10/29: Please make the leader lines (points) black so that they are easy to see.
Also, change the labels to black and enlarge the font size of everything but the screen
title.]
8. The second screen in 4.1.5 shows a ghosty table underneath a genetic cross on the
top. Can we give the table lines a bit more substance? They look more like a
vestigial mistake than intentional table lines.
[Andy 10/29: Please make this correction.]
9. In 4.1.5 when the genotypes drop down to form the table, they seem to pass
through a tiny white field that wipes them out during their “trip” downwards but
reveals them as they continue out from under them. This is weird. Can we get rid
of these phantom fields that are obscuring the genotypes as they drop into position
along the sides of the table?
[Andy 10/29: Please make this correction.]
10. In 4.1.5 there is an interactivity screen with buttons at the bottom (after the table
of zygote genotypes is constructed) – this screen comes up and quickly dissolves
to the vegetable photo before the user gets a chance to do anything. We need a
stop on this page, and maybe a CONTINUE or next button.
[Andy 10/29: Please make this correction.]
LIGHTCONE 11/6 – We made a pass at correcting some problems
with the last part of the animation..(There always seem to be
problems with mixing animations with exercises.) I think the text
needs some editing, but we took the: “button-look” out so the user
wouldn’t feel compelled to press a button and nothing would happen.
Take a look—edit the text and we’ll get on the next pass.
Second Pass Comments from Eric Stavney 11/8/03
1. In the last line of the Introductory page the word “co dominance” needs to be put
together without a space to make “codominance”
[Andy 11/10: Please make this correction.]
2. We need a scroll flag at the beginning of 4.1.2 called “Incomplete Dominance”
and three other ones are supposed to be in 4.1.2 also: P1, F1, and F2. I can live
with the lack of subscripts for these but I can’t live without them scroll flags.
They’re dear to my heart, and I miss them.
[Andy 11/10: Please add the “Incomplete Dominance” flag but the others aren’t
necessary.]
3. In 4.1.4, let’s at least put a scroll flag at the beginning of the sequence named
“Codominance”.
[Andy 11/10: Please make this correction.]
4. Add a scroll flag at the start of 4.1.5 called “Multiple Alleles”, a second one at
4.1.5.2 when the graphic changes to the “H Substance precursor” called “H
allele”, a third at 4.2.5.3 when the graphic reveals the three colored sugar chains
called “A and B Antigens”, and a fourth at the transition back to the pedigree
chart called “Bombay Phenotype”.
[Andy 11/10: Please add the “Multiple Alleles” flag but the others aren’t necessary.]
5. There is an animation problem at the transition from 4.1.5.1 to 4.1.5.2 when the
pedigree chart first dissolves to the chemical equation about the H Substance
precursor. The whole graphic enlarges for a few frames just before the transition.
Can we get rid of these frames or resize the pedigree so this doesn’t happen?
[Andy 11/10: Please make this correction.]
6. In Exercise 4.1.6 (Multiple Alleles), we need to fix a spacing problem between
the second and third sentences of the Interaction Instructions. The junction
between these two sentences needs a space to read “….the ABO blood group
system. Blood groups in the….” [underlining added for emphasis only].
[Andy 11/10: Please make this correction. Add the screen title “Multiple Allele
Exercise” to the top of the screen.]
7. In 4.1.7 (Gene Interaction) we need a scroll flag at the beginning called “Gene
Interaction”, a second one right when the captions about “Either dominant allele
A or B present….etc.” fade in under the veggies called “Alleles in squash”,
another at the transition to the genetic cross and grid table called “Dihybrid
cross”, and final one at the transition back to the veggie photo called “Other
traits”.
[Andy 11/10: Please add the “Gene Interaction” flag but the others aren’t necessary.]
8. In 4.1.7, the second text unit that scrolls opposite the genetic cross and table needs
surgery on the second paragraph. Delete the text saying “Click the play button to
see the genotypes….”, keep the “What phenotypes and phenotypic….” sentence,
delete the “Click the buttons at the bottom….” But keep the final sentence “Note
that the ratios……”.
[Andy 11/10: Please make this change.]
