Book F Chapter 2 Lesson 4 VOCAB: Foliated: the texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands Nonfoliated: the texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are not arranged in planes or bands Metamorphism: Rocks undergo the process of metamorphism when exposed to high heat (temperatures) and pressure deep inside the Earth. Rocks DO NOT MELT during the metamorphic process Contact Metamorphism: -rocks are only exposed to high temperatures to cause the rocks to undergo change -heated by nearby magma -occurs near igneous intrusions Regional Metamorphism: -rocks are exposed to both high temperatures and high pressure to cause rocks to change -occurs deep within Earth’s crust -found beneath most continental rock formations FOLIATED Rocks have minerals that are arranged invisible bands or layers NONFOLIATED Rocks do not have any visible bands or layers These rocks usually contain only a few minerals.
