Assignment - 5 (Metamorphic Rocks) (10%)
Please answer practice questions 6.1, 6.2, 6.4 and 6.6 at the end of the related chapter in the text
book.
6.1. Where and why metamorphisms occur in the earth? (2.5pt)
Metamorphism occurs both near ground surface and at depth. It can take place at igneous and
sedimentary rocks due to high temperature, pressure, tectonic effects and reaction with heated
water.
6.2. Summarize the differences between the regional and contact metamorphism. (2.5pt)
Regional metamorphism takes place due to tectonic forces at convergence boundaries by high
temperature and high pressure. It takes place deep within the crust. This type of metamorphism
results in foliated rocks and form the center core of mountain ranges.
The contact metamorphism takes place due to intruding magma. The heat is more important
mechanism. Non- foliated rocks are formed due to this type of metamorphism.
6.4. How does foliation take place? (2.5pt)
The foliation is caused by the tectonic stresses acting in a predominant direction. This causes the
elongation of platy mineral grains perpendicular to high pressure direction.
6.6. Discuss the engineering problems associated with metamorphic rocks? (2.5pt)
Foliation is the main challenge from the perspective of engineering properties. The foliation
forms weak planes which may be of engineering concerns.
