ECONOMICS
Ozlem Barin (advisor Ihsuan Li) was
awarded a Foundation Grant for, “An
Analysis of Labor, Infrastructure, and
Education Issues Brought By the North
Dakota Oil Boom,” November 2012.
Jongha Jung (advisor Ken Park) was
awarded an IRC Supply Grant for his paper,
“Testing the Capitol Asset Pricing Model
(CAPM),” November 2012.
GOVERNMENT
Dr. Fred Slocum, Dr. Kevin Parsneau, Joe
Ebbinga, Will Lomker, and Ben
Shakespear attended the Minnesota
Political Science Association Conference at
the Humphrey School of Public Affairs,
University of Minnesota, November 10,
2012.
Child Welfare Training System program. This mandated
training for all new Child Welfare county employees and this
is the first time that MnDHS has allowed students to
complete this program before graduation, October 2012.
The Department of Social Work recognized several students
who had previously received scholarships and/or were BSSW
and MSW Title IV-E Child Welfare Scholars at the Annual
Social Work Honors Day 2012, November 2, 2012.
Leah Elbert, Tiffany Breckenridge, and Sarah Sater were honored
as Social Welfare Scholars

Dan Flaaen, a former MSU graduate student, now at the
University of Wisconsin-Richland Center, presented, “We’re
“Fed” Up and Tea’d Off: Frame Analysis of the Tea Party
Movement,” at the Joint Meetings of the Sociologists of
Minnesota, Wisconsin Sociological Association and the
Wisconsin Political Science Association in River Falls, WI,
October 2012.
Heather Bradford presented, “Fences and Frames: How
Power and Opportunity Limit Reproductive Rights Frames,”
at the Joint Meetings of the Sociologists of Minnesota,
Wisconsin Sociological Association, and the Wisconsin
Political Science Association in River Falls, WI, October
2012.
Elisabeth Marie-Joy Mumford presented, “Females in a

Meetings of the Sociologists of Minnesota, Wisconsin
Faculty and Department Activities
Hamburg Germany. Haus Rissen is a non-partisan and private
institute for civic education founded in 1954. The lecture was
cosponsored by the U.S. Consulate in Hamburg. The audience
was primarily composed of Bundeswehr (German) and U.S.
Army officers training together in the Joint Command,
November 5, 2012.
ECONOMICS
Phillip Miller was elected to be the vice president of the
Missouri Valley Economics Association, Fall 2012.
Phillip Miller was interviewed by ESPN.com regarding the
lockout of NHL players that is ongoing, November 2012.
GOVERNMENT
Tomasz Inglot participated in a special international and
interdisciplinary seminar on the “Cold War and the Welfare
State” at the Nobel Peace Institute in Oslo, Norway. He
presented a paper, “Western Welfare States Watched from the
East During the Cold War: Condemnation, Competition, and
Creative Learning, November 11-14, 2012.
Joseph Kunkel delivered the keynote address for the
Fulbright Alumni Association Welcome Meeting at the
International School, Frankfurt, Germany. He spoke on the
topic of: "The 2012 U.S. Election: How We Got Here, What
Happened and What Comes Next?" The audience was
composed approximately 60 Fulbright alumni; Germans who
had studied or researched in the U.S. and a few Americans
currently on Fulbright appointments in Germany, November
10, 2012.
Joseph Kunkel was interviewed by Annette Helfman of the
Lohrer Echo, Lohr Germany about his visit with relatives in
the Kunkel's ancestral village of Wiesthal and his week-long
tour of Germany lecturing on the U.S. elections, November 5,
2012.

November 15, 2012.
Pat Nelson was awarded a Faculty Improvement Grant to
complete her terminal degree at Walden University,

The Law Enforcement Program honored faculty and students
for the 100% passing rate of students who have written the
Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) exam,
November 7, 2012.

school) in Nuremberg, Germany. The audience was
composed of about 100 students in their last year of
gymnasium, November 7, 2012.

Kathy Bertsch was awarded a Fall 2012 Faculty Research
Grant, “Assessing the Correlation Between Least Restrictive
Environment and Educational Outcomes for Students with
Disabilities,” November 2012.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Clark Johnson was awarded a Faculty Improvement Grant
for visiting MSU-Partner Scandinavian universities to learn
about study-abroad for SBS Students and meeting with social
studies educators to learn about civic education and assessing
critical thinking, November 5, 2012.
SOCIAL WORK
Michelle Alvarez was awarded a Faculty Improvement Grant
to attend a 2-week higher education leadership seminar in
Boston, MA, titled, “Management Development Program,” at
Harvard University, November 5, 2012.
Nancy Fitzsimons was awarded a Faculty Improvement
Grant to participate in a Green Dot Violence Prevention
Institute, Four-Day Instructor Certification Training to
become a certified Green Dot instructor, November 5, 2012.

and the Direction of U.S. Politics" at Haus Rissen in

Steve Buechler presented a keynote address, “Sociology,
Social Movements and the Prospects for Democratization,”
at the October 2012 Joint Conference of the Sociologists of
Minnesota, the Wisconsin Sociological Association and the
Wisconsin Political Science Association in River Falls,
Wisconsin, October 2012.
Steve Buechler published a peer-reviewed, revised version
of the above keynote address titled, “Movements + Elections
= Democracy,” at The Society Pages: Social Science That
Matters, November 2012.
Steve Buechler has three forthcoming articles, “Mass
Society Theory,” “New Social Movements and New Social
Movement Theory,” and “Strain and Breakdown Theories,”
in The Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Social and Political
Movements edited by David A. Snow, Donatella Della Porta,
Bert Klandermans, and Doug McAdam which will be
published in February 2013.
Steve Buechler’s book, “Understanding Social Movements:
Theories from the Classical Era to the Present,” was named
on of Choice Magazine’s Outstanding Academic Books of
2011, November 2012.
Barbara Carson’s, “Teaching Restorative Justice to
Education and Criminal Justice Majors,” was accepted in the
Contemporary Justice Review, 2013.
James Robertson’s, “What Will Be the Legacy of Dee
Farmer for Transgendered Prisoners?” was published in
Correctional Law Reporter, December 2012.
James Robertson’s, “Exchanging Sex for Protection: Do the
PREA Standards Legitimate ‘Shielding’ Arrangements
Between Inmates?” was published in the Correctional Law
Reporter, October 2012.
James Robertson’s, “The Constitution in Protective
Custody: An Analysis of the Rights of Protective Custody
Inmates,” was cited in the U.S. Court of Appeals of the 5th
Circuit in Morgan v. Hubert in its ruling regarding the use of
protective custody in prison, November 2012.
URBAN AND REGIONAL STUDIES
Raymond Asomani-Boateng was awarded a Faculty
Improvement Grant to improve and update the contents of
MSU Ghana Study Abroad Program by identifying and
visiting exciting study sites and activities, November 5,
2012.
Beth Wielde-Heidelberg was awarded a Fall 2012 Faculty
Research Grant, “Preserving Ghosts: Integrating a City’s
Haunted History into Modern Planning and Design,”

four advisors for their extraordinary, distinguished, and
