Description:
According to GTM Research, a US energy advisory firm, Chile was responsible for half of new solar
installations in the Latin America region in 2015. The country's recent success attracting renewable energy
investments follows the passage of Law 20,698 of 2013, which gave non-conventional renewable energy
(NCRE) generation projects priority consideration in the country's southern regions, among other incentives.
Chile aims to generate 20% of its energy mix from NCRE sources by 2020.
The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that foreign direct investment to Chile stood at US$18.5bn in
2015, down from US$22.0bn in 2014 and US$19.3bn in 2013. We expect a better performance in the 2016-20
period, reflecting stronger real GDP growth, with foreign capital inflows rising to US$19.2bn in 2016 and
averaging US$21.6bn in the four years through 2020.
Effective January 1st 2016, the government repealed the Foreign Investment Statute (Decree Law 600 of
1974), which had extended certain protections to foreign investors. According to Michelle Bachelet, the
president, several decades of economic and political stability had rendered these investment-protection
clauses unnecessary.
