Through Mondo Cane, MIKE PATTON reassesses
one of the most lively
periods of Italian vocal repertoire, without slipping
into mild nostagia.
He ventures, instead, in a creative interpretation of
what may be
considered the standard of the Italian pop tradition.
The repertoire
is wide: more than 20 songs are included, by
renowed italian
composers and singers as Ennio Morricone (Deep down), Domenico Modugno (Dio come ti
amo), Nino Rota (O Venezia), Luigi Tenco (Lontano, lontano), Nico Fidenco (Legata ad un
granello di sabbia), Fred Buscaglione (Una sigaretta), Adriano Celentano (Storia d’amore),
Gianni Morandi (Ti offro da bere) and many others.
Michael Allan Patton (born January 27, 1968) is an American singer, songwriter, composer
and multi-instrumentalist, best known as the lead singer of the rock band Faith No More
from 1988 to 1998. He has also handled lead vocals for Mr. Bungle (which preceded his
involvement with FNM), Tomahawk, Lovage, Fantômas, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and
Peeping Tom. Patton has earned critical praise for his diverse vocals, which touch on
crooning, falsetto, death growls, rapping, mouth music, beatboxing and scatting, among
other techniques; critic Greg Prato writes, "Patton could very well be one of the most
versatile and talented singers in rock music." He often produces side projects in
collaboration with other musicians, such as John Zorn, Dan the Automator, The Melvins,
The Dillinger Escape Plan, Melt-Banana, Sepultura, Merzbow, Kool Keith, The X-Ecutioners,
Team Sleep, Björk, Subtle, Rahzel, Amon Tobin, Eyvind Kang, Lovage, and Kaada. He cofounded Ipecac Recordings with Greg Werckman in 1999, and has run the label since.
In love with Italian song and binded to Italy by a long personal story (he lived in Bologna
and his wife is Italian), he “collects” memorable Italian pieces and songs. The vocal
repertoire of Mondo Cane was specially choosen and re-arranged for this project, whose
title refers, maybe “accidentally”, to an old Italian 1962 cult documentary which raised a
lot of discussion.
