He makes fabulous pizza (from a secret family recipe), but knows nothing about computers. You and your table partner have been hired as database designers to create a solution for Papa’s Pizzeria so he can easily track customers’ information and orders, and focus on what he loves to do the most – making delicious pizza! Plan the Solution Guiding Question Using each stage of the IB Design Cycle, how will your team solve Papa’s problem? Write the following steps in your IB Design Notebook, along with a description of what you will do to complete each of them: Investigate Plan Design Create Evaluate Answers Evaluate the database on your computer’s display. Enter customer data and orders to test the database’s functionality. Adjust and edit as necessary. Design and run SQL queries and reports. Generate graphs. 1. Do the queries accurately return the data requests? (see supplemental material) Investigate Step 1 Investigate pizza restaurants: Go to www.papajohns.com. In your IB Design Notebook, write a list of criteria that is needed to maintain customer information and orders. Evaluate Plan Step 5 2. Does the form appear neatly formatted and easy to read? 3. Are there any typos, misspelled fields or data entry errors? Create the table and form. Using MS Access, create the database according to steps #2 and #2. Create Step 4 Step 2 Design Step 3 Design the form. In your IB Design Notebook, sketch the layout of the fields, heading and location of images. Identify combo box fields. Plan the type of database you’d like to create (flat or relational ). In your IB Design Notebook, write the headings: field names, data types and descriptions, and list the criteria for the table(s). Determine the primary key. List combo box values. Mark! Set! Go! Instructions Work with your table partner. Use your IB Design Notebook and the steps of the IB Design Cycle to investigate, plan, design, create and evaluate a database solution that includes: One (or two) tables (determine flat or relational?) One form with combo boxes. One query – your choice of criteria. Must include a calculation. One report based upon the query. Amp it Up! Create additional queries and reports as desired. Add navigational/refresh buttons to your form. What’s next? Team presentations Peer and self-evaluations
