To change a data value to one on a standard normal distribution, find the value's zscore.
z= xμ
σ
Standard Normal Distribution tables (front of your book)
To find an area/probability/percent that will be to the left (below) your zscore:
• find the first decimal place on the left
• find the second decimal place on the top
• slide fingers together to find the area/probability/percent
example: find area to the left of z=1.13.
Techniques for finding areas to the Left, Right, and Between zscores.
Left
use table to find area to left of z
P(x<z)
Right
use table to find area to the left
subtract value from 1
P(x>z)
Between
use table to find both left areas
subtract the lesser value from the larger value
P(z<x<z)
Or
use table to find area of both regions. (subtract the upper from 1)
add areas together
P(x>z or x<z)
