HIST 1700 Ancient and Pre-Modern World History / 3 cr.
This course surveys ancient, classical, and medieval civilizations from approximately 3500 B.C.E. to approximately
1450 C.E. Topics include Mesopotamian thought and religion; the evolution of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam;
ancient Greek and Roman governments; Asian empires and the spread of Buddhism; African kingdoms and
empires; medieval feudalism and manorialism, and the geography and peoples of the Americas. MNTC: 2/5/8

OUTLINE OF MAJOR CONTENT AREAS (Course Specific Outcomes)
 Students will be able to identify, understand, and interrelate the significant political, economic, and social
phases of the major trends and developments in world history from approximately 3500 B.C.E. to
approximately 1450 C.E., including the following general concepts:
o the nature of interdependence and cross cultural influences between regions of the world.
o comparisons and contrasts in the ways different regions developed
o the role of tolerance and intolerance in the development of various societies
o alternative or multiple perspectives on world history -- what it is and how it is created
o multi-factor understanding of the causes of major changes within different world regions
o critical analysis of both the creative, or contributing, and the destructive, or dominating, roles played
by different world societies
