The International Winter University [IWU] Kassel combines high quality education with invaluable personal experiences. The IWU Kassel was selected by the German Academic Exchange Service [DAAD] as an excellent short-term program, and was developed in cooperation with US university partners. The IWU 2016 program is designed for motivated and qualified undergraduate and graduate students, as well as young professionals. December 29, 2015 January 18, 2016 The International Winter University offers two academic seminars to choose from: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING: RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES or GERMAN CULTURAL STUDIES: REFLECTIONS ON GERMAN HISTORY, LITERATURE AND ART. In addition to the seminar chosen, all students will also attend GERMAN LANGUAGE CLASSES. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING 45 contact hours , 4 ECTS credits This seminar is designed for students in engineering or urban and landscape planning and offers an in-depth introduction to cutting-edge renewable energy sources. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about German and European perspectives on energy while covering topics such as wind turbines, photovoltaics, geothermal technologies, and biomass. The University of Kassel is a leader in the field of environmental engineering in Germany and around the world. This seminar is taught by renowned faculty members and includes field trips to further demonstrate the real-life environmental and economic impact of these new and promising technologies. GERMAN LANGUAGE LEARNING GERMAN CULTURAL STUDIES 30 contact hours , 2 ECTS credits 45 contact hours , 4 ECTS credits All participants attend a German language course offered at different levels based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages [Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced]*. Studying in small groups, IWU students enjoy a friendly and relaxed atmosphere that is conducive to interactive language learning. Our highly qualified language instructors employ innovative teaching methods to make learning fun and effective. This seminar is designed for students in the humanities and social sciences who are interested in German arts and literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. The material covered explores German history and its influence on today‘s culture while engaging participants in topics such as movements in German literature, philosophy, and art. Students will take a closer look at the crucial players of this time period, including Goethe, Nietzsche, and the Bauhaus movement. And after lessons, you can practise your German with your host family and dive into the German culture! *CEFR Levels A1-C2 Throughout the course, participants will visit Kassel‘s various museums and Weimar, an intellectual center of Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The enduring spirit of this era and its role for 20th century politics in Germany makes the town appealing to appreciators of architecture, literature and art or political science and history.
