Non-Chemical Water Purification
Abstract
Access to clean drinking water is a challenge for people in many parts of the world. Developing
an affordable, non-chemical method would help many people gain access to the water they need to live.
Water can be purified in a two-step process where it is first filtered to remove particulates and then
sterilized by heating to165 oF (~78 oC). At this temperature, most bacteria that cause diseases including E.
coli, salmonellosis and amoebiases will be killed. Additionally, the amount of energy needed to heat the
water to 165 oF is much less than is needed compared to the more traditional route of distillation where
the water must first be vaporized and then condensed. In this project, a solar still will be a set-up to purify
the water. Motors will be controlled via reKam 1 technology from Texas Instruments to pump water from
the initial container, into the purification chamber and finally into a “purified water” container once it
reached 165 oF.
