The Box Design Brief
Exp Tech 10
Name____________
Situation Background
Packaging engineers and designers must develop packaging that protects the product while
meeting the needs of consumers as well as the retailer. When containers are designed and constructed
the weight, strength, flexibility, cost and means of disposal need to be considered. Other thoughts have
to do with the tools, machines that need to be used to cut and assemble the container. Add to this the
artwork or graphic information that needs to be placed on the container.
For this design you are to consider yourselves to be a company which is putting a proposal
together for a contract. You are to construct a new container for a producer that wishes the container
to be used for mailing materials to clients. The result of your design and presentation are your efforts to
win the contract.
Assignment or Problem Statement
Your group is to design and construct a prototype container that meet the specifications
outlined within a seven day period. The final work for evaluation will consist of a design portfolio, and a
presentation to the client (class).
Specifications
1. Container must hold a maximum volume of material of 500ml. Remember that for a rectangular
shape is volume = length x width x height.
2. Construction material should be recyclable, “cradle to cradle” design. Use of bio gradable
materials is best, and economy in the use of materials is to be expected. Think before you cut.
3. The design needs to be economical; therefore material which you use for construction must be
of low cost.
4. The design must be one where the container lies flat for storage until required for usage.
5. The container should be made such that it can flow through a system of belts without hooking
or snagging.
6. Strength of the container needs to be strong enough to hold the contents of 500 grams of
material, and retain its form if dropped from a height of 1.5 meters.
7. Shape must be such that a high economy rate is achieved. This means that the biggest volume is
achieved for least amount of material used. Check a Math 10 text for more details.
8. Graphic design work on your container must include, your company’s logo, instruction for use of
container, and spaces allocated for addresses and postage.
Evaluation
Your grading for this activity will be based on a rubric for:
1. Your groups design portfolio - 10points
3. Your evaluation of the team-5 points
2. Your groups presentation-10points
4. Teacher team evaluation-5points
