Objective:
To contribute to the improvement of livelihoods of vulnerable populations in Bangladesh
by safeguarding human and animal health and improving food security and safety.
Key partners:
The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock
(MoFL).
Beneficiaries reached:
Government line ministries, technical institutions, livestock and poultry producers and
farm managers.
Activities implemented:

Results:
Collected 4 729 samples from free-range ducks, wild and domestic birds and
chickens from live bird markets (LBMs) to identify disease transmission dynamics.
Provided 1 850 ducks, 185 sheds and 4 625 kg of feed to 185 beneficiaries.
Continued the cleaning, disinfection and regular surveillance of 25 major LBMs in
the country.
Upgraded and renovated six LBMs to meet biosecurity standards.
Provided training to 100 farmers/farm managers, LBM personnel, traders and
veterinary officers on biosecurity and disinfection.
Supported the MoFL’s adoption of the One Health Strategic Framework and fiveyear action plan for a multi-sector One Health approach to infectious diseases.
Provided hands-on training to a total of 85 Upazila Livestock Officers, Veterinary
Surgeons and DLS staff on the online Livestock Disease Information System for
animal disease surveillance and reporting of disease events to veterinary
authorities.
Established DLS checkposts in 12 strategic locations across the country to monitor
poultry movements from farm to LBM and identify signs of highly pathogenic avian
influenza (HPAI).

Facilitated the coordination, planning and policy support activities of the DLS for the
effective management and control of HPAI and other zoonotic emerging and reemerging diseases.
 Enabled reporting of the animal health situation directly from the field, drastically
reducing reporting time and increasing the possibility for early animal disease
detection and response.
 Assisted in the establishment of solid partnerships with DLS and key stakeholders in
both the private and public sectors, with the aim of helping LBMs to meet
biosecurity standards in order to contribute to safe and secure poultry products.
