Aching Joints
• An estimated 52.5 million adults in the United States reported
being told by a doctor that they have some form of arthritis,
rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia.
• One in five (22.7%) adults in the United States report having
doctor diagnosed arthritis.
• In 2010-2012, arthiritis affects 50% of adults 65 years or older
• And 1/3 of ages 45 to 64.
• By 2030, an estimated 67 million Americans ages 18 years or
older are projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis.
• An estimated 294,000 children under age 18 have some form
of arthritis or rheumatic condition; this represents
approximately 1 in every 250 children in the U.S. ( CDC, NHIS)
Health Joints
vs
Damaged
Joints
Typical joints consist of bones covered in a cushion of articular
cartilage and synovial fluid that acts as a lubricant.
-- allows for smooth conduction of the joint through its whole
range of motion.
Pain in your joints is typically caused by overexertion or damage
to the joint, and tends to occur more as we age
Major Categories of Arthritis
Osteo- and Rheumatoid- and
Other Auto-Immune Arthropathies
• Arthritis affects more than 46 million people
• Results in disability for 19 million people.
• Among chronic diseases in the US, arthritis causes more
disability than any other condition, including heart disease,
diabetes, and back or spine problems.
• Rheumatoid Arthritis is the third most common type of
arthritis behind:
-- Osteoarthritis (prevalence 27 million)
-- Gout (prevalence 6 million).
-- RA affects approximately 1 million in the US.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
is an Auto-Immune Disease
• RA is one of the more common autoimmune diseases, with
rates higher than a number of other conditions, including
psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, Type I (insulin-dependent)
diabetes, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.
Osteo-Arthritis (OA) Affects 27 Million Americans
Osteoarthritis—the most common type of arthritis—
• Degenerative joint disease -- characterized by a breakdown of
cartilage—the tissue that cushions the end of bones and
allows them to move smoothly.
• Typically occurs in hips, hands, knees, lower back, and neck.
Traditional Medical Approach Uses
Medication, Injections and Surgery
•
Acetaminophen is an effective pain reliever for
OA, but it doesn’t address inflammation.
• Ibuprofen and naproxen reduce inflammation
and relieve pain.
Warning – All medications have side effects:
• Acetaminophen is the #1 cause of liver failure
in the US
• Ibuprofen can be damaging to the kidney
• NIH warns that Naproxen can increase risk for
heart attack.

Prescription analgesics such as Tramadol or stronger
painkillers, like codeine are habit-forming.
How to Ease Osteoarthritis Pain
Naturally
• Lose weight – At the conclusion of an 18-month study, those
who took part in a diet-and-exercise program lost on average
approximately 11 % of their starting weight, and reported a
51 % reduction in pain.
• Exercise- exercise strengthens muscles and
tissues around the cartilage, and can significantly
reduce inflammation and pain. Aquatics, cycling,
and walking can build strength and burn calories.
• Healthy diet loaded with vegetables
• Supplementation
Ideal Diet to Reduce Inflammation
Fruits and Vegetables. Whole
fruits, berries and vegetables, are all rich in
vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and
phytochemicals. Choose green and brightly
colored vegetables and whole fruits.
Fats and Oils. Omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids are an important part of
an anti-inflammatory diet. Many of the protein
sources also contain beneficial fats, including
fish, seafood, soy, avocados, olives and nuts.
Protein Sources. Anti-inflammatory protein
sources include most fish and seafood, poultry
and plant-based sources .
Alex ‘s Story
Bad knees (and generally stiff joints, which runs in the family) since I was
young. Limited range of motion, pain during exertion, and hypersensitivity
when almost anything touched my knee.
•Competitive runner, regular physical therapy, then sporadic exercise, and feeling
forced into a sedentary lifestyle over the course of many years.
•2 1/2 years ago, I could not execute a squat (or, at least, I couldn't get out of one),
could
not run without destructive and painful effects, and even had issues
walking.
• Sharon convinced me to try Joint Health. Complex
• Within 6 months, I was able to run again and have continued to improve over the
year and now run a steady schedule again.
•Symptoms that plagued me even when I was exercising intensely in my 20s have
been
much diminished: My range of motion is better than ever .My joints are the
last things to hurt on a run; and I can bump my knees into the occasional table leg,
etc., without doubling over in pain.
• I am a natural skeptic, and so have conducted several "control" black-outs, where I
don't take the supplement. With Joint Health, the relationship between symptoms and
lack of supplement is pronounced. Sensitivity and stiffness are unmistakable after a
week, but the symptoms diminish within a week back on the supplement. .

Rusty’s Story –
Ankylosing Spondylitis
•
•
•
•
•
Definition -- Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that affects the spine. (AS)
symptoms include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. The spine's
bones (vertebrae) may grow or fuse together, resulting in a rigid spine. These changes may be
mild or severe, and eventually lead to a stooped-over posture.
At the age of 30 years, I could not get out of bed and dressed without help. I continually
limped and generally felt lousy.
I discovered in my late 30’s that I had ankylosing spondylitis. A degenerative disease affecting
my spine and generally was causing a “fusing” of my spine. I learned there was no cure and
that my health would suffer because of it. I was told that the greatest benefit would be
exercise…and I couldn’t get out of bed without help!
I was introduced to Shaklee just before my 40th birthday, and two things happened. One … I
began to feel a better. I had more energy and less pain. Two … I began to study
complementary medical disciplines that I did not study in Pharmacy School.
Now forty years later I do not look like a typical ankylosing spondylitis patient. Do I still have
the disease? Yes. Has it affected my lifestyle? Maybe a little, but not much.

Cox-1 and Cox-2 are Cyclo-oxygenase enzyme inhibitors
• Contains Boswellia, which is a natural Cox 2 inhibitor BUT
has no Cox-1 inhibition
• There are dozens of Cox-2 products – aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve
and Motrin … all the Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
• Some Cox-2 inhibitors are prescription drugs and yet medical
science has not been able to find a COX-2 inhibitor that does
not also inhibit Cox-1.
Cox-1 protects the lining of your stomach.
The danger of the traditional Cox-2 products is
that they all cause bleeding …
Essential Fatty Acids
Omega-3’s and Omega-6’s
Naturally anti-inflammatory … plus
• Helps reduce risk of heart disease
• Reduces triglycerides
• Reduces total cholesterol…raises HDL and lowers LDL
Improves eczema
• Slows macular degeneration
• Essential for brain health
• Reduces stiffness of arthritis
Prostaglandin E1
• Prevents blood platelets from
sticking together, thus helps
prevent heart attacks &
strokes caused by blood clots.,
•Relaxes blood vessels,
improving circulation,
•Lowers blood pressure.
• Reduces inflammation
•Makes insulin work more
effectively and
•Enhances the T-cell function
of the immune system.
Gamma linoleic acid (GLA)
increases this beneficial
prostaglandin.
Understanding Prostaglandins
Prostaglandin E2
Prostaglandin E3
• Promotes platelet aggregation ..
1st step to clot formation,
• Increases risk for heart attack
and stroke.
•Causes kidneys to retain sodium,
leading to water retention,
• Causes inflammation.
• Saturated fats containing
arachidonic acid ( animal
sources) increase levels of
this pro-inflammatory
prostaglandin.
Omega 6 -- GLA
Omega 3 – Omega Guard
• Has similar
functions as PE1.
• Prevents the
release of
arachidonic acid
stored in cell
membranes and its
conversion to PE2.
Omega-3 fatty
acids (Omega Guard)
are the source of this
beneficial
prostaglandin.
Prostaglandin PG 1
Prostaglandin PG 3
