Welcome to the Central Academy IB Informational Meeting Thursday, April 25, 2007 IB Phrases to Know SL – Standard Level: A course that has 150 seat hours. Students must take three SL courses. HL – Higher Level: A course that has 240 seat hours. Students must take three HL courses. * NOTE * In some instances, a student may take four HL classes and two SL classes. IB Phrases to Know Internal Assessment: An evaluation instrument that is graded by the teacher but is moderated by another teacher somewhere in the world. External Assessment: The culminating exam given in May of a student’s senior year, though one or two tests may be taken at the end of the junior year. Graphical Display Calculator The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition Assessment SL HL Paper 1 – No GDC 1.5 hrs 2 hrs Paper 2 – GDC Options Paper – GDC 1.5 hrs 2 hrs 1 hr Both papers have two parts: short-response and extended-response. The Options Paper is all extended-response. IB English There are four parts to IB English Part 1: World Literature Part 2: Detailed Study Part 3: Groups of Works Part 4: School’s Free Choice Part 1: World Literature Three works that are translated into English each by a different author Part 1 Product Two papers are written #1 – Compare two Part 1 works #2 – World literature not used in #1 Analysis of a key passage OR Comparison of two key passages Part 2: Detailed Study Four works are selected from 2 choices One from Shakespeare, one from poetry, one from novel and short story, and one from non-fiction prose OR Two from Shakespeare, and one from two of : poetry, novel/short story, or non-fiction prose Part 2 Product Individual oral commentary on one randomly selected Part 2 work. Prep time of 20 minutes Exam time of 15 minutes Part 3: Groups of Works Four works chosen and linked by genre Choose three from drama, poetry, prose fiction, or prose non-fiction Choose one work from anywhere else in the IB curriculum Part 3 Product Final exam – 2 hours Paper 1 – Prose or Poetry commentary Paper 2 – Essay question on Part 3 works Part 4: School’s Free Choice Four works are chosen Three by different authors in English One World Literature piece linked by theme Part 4 Product Individual Presentation – 10-15 minutes Individuals and Societies Difference between HL and SL HL has a regional focus on comparative history within the region SL has a global focus on comparative history between two regions There are three Regional Options Americas Europe and Middle East Asia and Oceania To begin with, we will choose only one.
