LOCK SYSTEM
AMERICA AS A WORLD POWER
• Human factors – United States
supported a revolution in
Panama in the early 1900s. The
U.S. was permitted to build the
canal and control a zone of 5
miles on each side of the canal
(known as the Canal Zone). The
division of the country into two
parts by the U.S. territory
caused tension throughout the
20th Century. President Jimmy
Carter signed a treaty to return
the Canal area to Panama on
December 31, 1999.
AMERICA AS A WORLD POWER
• Physical factors – the 48-mile international
waterway allows ships to pass between the Atlantic
Ocean and Pacific Ocean, saving about 8,000
miles from a journey around the southern tip of
South America (Cape Horn).
DISCUSSION QUESTION
The buying of land, construction of the canal, and
completion of the canal was mainly done by the
United States. How did the Panama Canal impact
the relationship between the United States and the
politics of the region?
The United States became more involved with the
politics of the region!
AMERICA AS A WORLD POWER

• Roosevelt Corollary – This
during the Spanish American War;
was added to the Monroe
expansionist policies as President
Doctrine. The U.S. would use
increased the U.S. role in Latin
force to protect its
America and the world; reasserted
economic interest in Latin
the Monroe Doctrine (Helped
America.
America to be recognized as a world
power)
AMERICA AS A WORLD POWER
• Dollar Diplomacy – Taft
encouraged investment
by U.S. banks/businesses
in Latin America and Far
East; promised military
protection to those who
invested abroad; WWI
reoriented the priorities of
the emerging world
power and U.S. foreign
policy makers returned to
a goal of
isolationism…except
when it came to Latin
America.
AMERICA AS A WORLD POWER
• Woodrow Wilson –
“missionary
diplomacy” The U.S.
had a moral
responsibility to deny
recognition to any
Latin American
government it
viewed as oppressive,
undemocratic, or
hostile to U.S.
interests.
