- Digestive System
(p62-65)
Recall – 11 Human Systems
Human Digestive System
The body’s digestive
system completes
four tasks:
Ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Elimination
Ingestion
• Ingestion: Food is
taken into the body.
• Once food in placed
into the mouth
digestion begins.
Digestion
• Digestion: Food is
physically broken
down into nutrients
(through dissolving
and breaking into
smaller bits) and also
broken down
chemically (through
chemical reactions).
Absorption
• During absorption,
nutrients diffuse or
are moved into the
blood and carried to
the cells.
• Energy from these
nutrients is made
available to cells
through cellular
respiration.
Elimination
• Elimination: Solid
waste passes from
the digestive
system out of the
body.
Organs of the Digestive System
Please label your digestive system diagram now.
Organ System Teaming
• Organ systems working together carry out
important tasks in the body.
• Most tasks in the body need the support of
two or more organ systems working together.
Can you identify some activities and the organ
systems that work together to complete
them?
Cellular Respiration
• Recall cellular respiration from last year?
• glucose + oxygen  carbon dioxide + water
• It’s how the body gets its energy requirements.
Cellular Respiration
• Glucose  from the digestive system
• Oxygen  from the respiratory system
• Circulatory system transports glucose and
oxygen to cells.
• Now cells have what they need for cellular
respiration.
CLASSWORK
• BLM 1-30
