Components of Blood Plasma- Liquid component of blood Red Blood Cells- Carry Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Throughout the body. Contain a molecule called hemoglobin which binds to oxygen. White Blood Cells- Fight Disease Platelets- Fragments that help to form clots Lymphatic System Network of vein like vessels that return fluid to the blood stream. This fluid is called lymph. Lymph Nodes are small knobs of tissue that filter the lymph that passes through. Cardiovascular System • Carries needed substances to cells and removes waste products. • Consists of the Heart, blood vessels and blood. Vocabulary • Arteries- Carry blood away from the heart. • Veins- Carry blood to the heart. • Capillaries- Tiny Vessels where substances are exchanged. Blood Flow- Two Loops 1. Right- Heart to lungs back to the heart. 2. Left-Heart to body back to the heart. The Respiratory System • Takes in Oxygen • Removes Carbon Dioxide and water Path of air Nose Pharynx Trachea Bronchus Lungs Cellular Respiration The cell takes in oxygen and glucose and makes ATP (energy) and carbon dioxide. It takes place in the mitochondria. Lungs • After the air reaches the lungs, it moves it to the alveoli which are small air sacks where gas exchange happens. • Carbon Dioxide moves out of the blood stream and Oxygen moves in. • When you breathe the ribs and the diaphragm expand and contract your chest. As a result air flows in or out. Excretory System • Collects and removes liquid waste from the body. • Maintains homeostasis. • Includes- Kidneys, bladder, urethra, ureters, lungs, Liver and Skin • Kidneys- Filter blood and regulate the amount of water. • Lungs- Remove Carbon Dioxide. • Skin- Remove Urea and water through perspiration. • Liver- Urea and bile are produced.
