Human Body Systems What is a system? • A group of cells, tissues and organs that work together both physically and chemically to carry out a task. Assignment • System: Give the name • Main Job: one sentence description of the job of the system • Organs: list main organs Cardiovascular System • Transport of materials to and from cells • Heart pumps blood • Blood vessels carry blood • Oxygen is delivered to all cells • Carbon dioxide is delivered out of cells • Arteries go away from heart and veins go towards heart • Sometimes called circulatory system Digestive System • Ingestion of food • Breakdown of food • Elimination of waste (large intestine) • Stomach churns (mixes) food • Small intestine “digests” food and sends it into the blood Endocrine System • Hormonal control of body functioning • Hormones are made in GLANDS • Growth hormone • Adrenalin hormone • ADH hormone to control water in body • Testosterone and Estrogen Immune System QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture.
