Civil War Battles Chuck Helmandollar, Elaine Koenig, and Mistie Manicho ED 608 Fall 2001 Fifth Grade Civil War Unit Goal and Rationale The 5th grade students will increase their understanding of the Civil War by examining the battles, their time lines and the Generals that led their respective armies into battle. It is important the curriculum include this information so that the students will have a complete history and understanding of the Civil War and how it affected the United States. Lee’s army defeated Union General Ambrose Burnside’s army Battles CHANCELLORSVILLE APRIL 30 – MAY 4, 1862 • Confederate Generals Lee and Jackson’s greatest victory by out- maneuvering Union General Joseph Hooker • Another disaster for the Union forces Battles VICKSBURG MAY 18-JULY 4, 1863 • Union General U. S. Grant besieged Vicksburg, leading the city to surrender because of starvation Battles GETTYSBURG JULY 1-3, 1863 • The turning point of the war • Union General George Meade defeated Confederate General Robert E.
