The Civil War By: Jason Runco Why were the battles of the Civil War so much bloodier than the battles of the Revolution and the War if 1812. How had battle field technology evolved so much from the war of 1812 How Had battle field tactics changed from the War of 1812 to the Civil War Why Were there so many more huge battles in the Civil War the in the war of 1812 of the Revolution Answer to first focus question The reason the Civil War battles were so much bloodier than the battles of the War of 1812 was because of many reasons. The first reason the scale of the Civil War battles dwarfed the size of the Battles of the War of 1812. The second reason tactics had changed in the civil war instead of standing up and firing at your enemy the soldiers hid behind barricades and fired at their enemies. The rifle and artillery had evolved tremendously From the War of 1812 to the Civil War. Answer to second focus question Battle field technology had evolved tremendously from 1812 to the Civil War. The other reason is that research on weaponry was increasing. Answer to Third focus question. The tactics underwent a huge change from the war of 1812 to the Civil War. In the Civil war before almost every battle the battlefield was ripped up by a artillery bombardment which was not as common in 1812. Also guerilla warfare was more common in the Civil War Answer to Fourth focus question. There were many more huge battles in the Civil war than 1812 because it was over a much larger span of territory and the U.S had many more people in 1861 than in 1812. The bombardment of Fort Sumter. This battle marked the start of the Civil War. Not one man was killed in the 33-hour bombardment. It was a bloodless start to the bloodiest war in U.S history The first battle of Manassas or the battle of Bull Run. The battle of Bull Run was fought in Virginia. The Union troops were on there way to Richmond the capital of the Confederacy. Bull Run (c0nt). The Union troops did not know that a Confederate force was Waiting for them at Manassas. The Confederacy had been told of the attack by Rose Greenhow who lived in Washington D.C. She had hidden a coded message in the locks of a young girl’s hair. When the confederate troops spotted the Union troops they charged at the Union screaming and firing, the green union troops retreated. The Battles of the Civil War (cont.) Bull Run (cont). The North was shocked they had lost the Battle. The North realized that beating the Confederacy would be no easy task. The Battle of Antietam. The Union was starting to to Execute its war Strategy the Union attacked Richmond with a huge force, yet they were still defeated. The Union also gained control of the Mississippi. Despite this confederate commanding general Robert Lee The Battles of the Civil War (cont.) Antietam (cont). Moved his forces into Maryland across the Potomac River. He hoped that the forces could convince Maryland to join the Confederacy. The Union and the Confederacy met at Antietam creek. The confederacy was horribly outnumbered and lost the battle. Some considered the Battle a loss for Both sides considering the massive casualties taken by both sides. Antietam was the bloodiest day of the war The Battles of the Civil War (cont.) The battle of Gettysburg. Robert E. Lee was confident about invading the Union yet again. Lee’s plan was to capture a northern city and hope that the north would consider peace talks. The Confederate and Union troops met outside Gettysburg Pennsylvania. There they battled for three days straight. Both sides took huge casualties. Despite the losses Lee inflicted on the union, he had lost a third of his army. The north had one the battle. The Battles of the Civil War (cont.) The siege of Vicksburg. The Union had gained control of the Mississippi River to the point that the South couldn’t move supplys or men up and down the River, but neither could the North because the Controlled one key location Vicksburg. For six weeks Union gun boats pounded the fort of Vicksburg. Grant’s land army also bombarded the fort. After six weeks facing starvation the Confederates surrendered. The Battles of the Civil War (cont.) The battles of Appomattox the Wilderness and the end of the Civil War. In 1864 Grants forces invaded Virginia in hope of taking Richmond the capital of the south. Grant’s and Lee’s army’s met in dense forest called the Wilderness. Grant’s army took massive casualties but they still Pushed on. Eventually Grants forces got to Petersburg the Gateway to Richmond. After nine months of fighting Lee’s Army surrendered. New battlefield tech A lot of new battlefield tech came into play in the civil war. There were many new break troughs such as New rifle technology instead of muskets Iron clad warships. New explosive artillery And the very new Gatling gun. All this new technology made the civil war the bloodiest war in American history to date.
