After Abraham Lincoln won the
presidential election of 1860.
Shortly after this election seven southern

They elected Jefferson Davis as president
of the Confederate States of America.

Tension was building because Lincoln did not want
the south to succeed in their plans.
War seemed impossible to avoid at this point.
War started at Fort Sumter on an island in the
harbor of Charleston, SC.
Leaving the Union like SC did was not a new idea.
Southerners considered leaving the Union since
1832. They thought by doing this they could
make their own laws against slavery.
The Civil War started in Fort Sumter on April 12,
1861.
Fort Sumter surrendered to the South and the
South then had control and claimed their victory
by raising the American flag.
Battle of Bull Run




On a bright and sunny day in July of
1861 people in Washington, D.C. with
smiling men and women boarded horse
and buggy.
These people were not going on a picnic.
They were going to WAR.
Like going to a movie these people
followed the soldiers to a stream at Bull
Run to watch the North win a battle
against the Confederates.
Reasons Why The North Thought They
Would Win So Easily
1.

6.
The North had a far larger population then the
South.
The North had more people who could fight as
soldiers, work in factories, and grow food.
The North had many more factories.
The North could make more guns and cannons.
The North had many more miles of railroad.
They could get soldiers, guns, cannons, and
food to the front lines faster than the South.
The Truth Woke Them Up

At Bull Run the North suffered a crashing
defeat.
The Southern soldiers sent the Northern
soldiers fleeing back to Washington.
The people who came to watch the show
were sent back in their wagons to
Washington chasing the Northern Army.
The South WON this battle.
Both sides now realized that this was
going to be a long, hard war.
Advantages Vs. Disadvantages
Northern Advantages
Southern Disadvantages
More people to fight and work.
Shorter supply chains.
More factories to produce
military supplies.
Excellent leadership in
the army.
More railroads, canals, and
roads to transport goods
Determination to
protect their way of life.
Ships to block supplies from
reaching the southern coast.
Knowledge of the land
in which they were
fighting.
