Hundreds of thousands of lives would be lost. The First Shots After Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election of 1860. Shortly after this election seven southern states announced they would no longer be part of the United States. They elected Jefferson Davis as president of the Confederate States of America. Soon after four more states joined the Confederacy. The First Shots (cont.) Tension was building because Lincoln did not want the south to succeed in their plans. War seemed impossible to avoid at this point. War started at Fort Sumter on an island in the harbor of Charleston, SC. Leaving the Union like SC did was not a new idea. Southerners considered leaving the Union since 1832. They thought by doing this they could make their own laws against slavery. The Civil War started in Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Fort Sumter surrendered to the South and the South then had control and claimed their victory by raising the American flag. Battle of Bull Run On a bright and sunny day in July of 1861 people in Washington, D.C. with smiling men and women boarded horse and buggy. These people were not going on a picnic. They were going to WAR. Like going to a movie these people followed the soldiers to a stream at Bull Run to watch the North win a battle against the Confederates.
