A poisonous relationship?

Why an alcohol programme for
prisoners?
 Alcohol misuse contributes to a
variety of criminal behaviours
and costs an estimated £7.3bn
per year.
 Alcohol is strongly associated
with crime and violent crime
in particular.
 A large number of prisoners
were under the influence of
alcohol at the time of their
offence and many (2/3 of male
prisoners) were hazardous
drinkers in the year prior to
incarceration.
 The Government introduced an
Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy
in 2004, and in line with this HM
Prison Service has developed an
Alcohol Strategy for Prisoners.
 Poly-substance users in prison
have access to accredited
