Chapter 5 Test Review
Work is…
the transfer of energy
any time you exert force
on an object that causes
it to move

Energy is…
the ability to do work or
cause change

Potential energy is…
the type of energy has
the potential to do work.
Associated with position
and shape of an object

Power is…
The rate at which work is
done.

Power = Energy Transferred
Time
Kinetic energy is…
the energy an object has
due to its motion.

KE = ½ x Mass x (Speed)
2
Elastic potential energy
is…
Potential energy specific
to the object’s shape
Associated with objects
that can be stretched or
compressed

Mechanical energy is…
The form of energy
associated with motion,
position, or shape of an
object.
Mechanical energy is always
the same, the potential and
kinetic energy changes
though.

ME = Potential + Kinetic
Gravitational potential
energy is…
potential energy related
to an object’s height or
position from the
ground
GPE = Weight x Height

Sound energy is…
a disturbance that travels through a medium as a wave.
Nuclear energy is…
a type of potential energy that is stored in the nucleus
of an atom. Nuclear energy is released during a nuclear
reaction. Fission splits nuclei and happens in a power
plant. Fusion joins nuclei and happens in the sun.
Chemical energy is…
a potential energy stored in chemical bonds.
Thermal energy is…
the total kinetic and potential energy of the particles in an
object. The parts of objects, like mocules or atoms, have a
kinetic energy of motion, and a potential energy, based on
how they are arranged. When these change, it changed the
thermal energy which changes the temperature.
Electrical energy is…
The energy of electric charges. This can be a form of
potential or kinetic depending on if the electrical current is
being used or allowed to flow from one area to another. If
your light is on, it’s kinetic. If your light is off, it’s potential.
Electromagnetic energy is…
a form of energy that travels through space in waves.
The visible light we see is one type of electromagnetic
energy. Others include radio waves and x-rays.
Energy transformations
are…
A change or changes from one type
of energy to another.
 Single Ex: Chemical to Kinetic  I
eat an apple then my muscles move
from the energy.
 Multiple Ex: Electromagnetic to
Chemical to Kinetic  The sun’s
light helps the apple tree grow an
apple. Then I eat the apple and my
muscles move from the energy.

As an object falls its
kinetic energy…
Increases

Decreases

Law of conservation of
energy states…
That when one form of
energy is transformed to
another, no energy is lost
in the process.

Key Questions
How are energy, work, and power related?
 What are the two main types of energy?
 How can you find an object’s mechanical energy?
 What are other forms of energy?
 How are different forms of energy related?
 What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?
