By Cameron Marks DEEP DARK SPACE Mercury A year on Mercury is only 88 Earth-days long. A day on Mercury is 59 Earth-days long. Mercury was named for the swift Roman messenger god who wore winged sandals. Venus Venus was named for the Roman god of love and beauty . Venus means “beautiful white one.” Temperatures can climb up to 900° F. Earth The Earth is a ball of rock almost covered by ocean. It is not too hot and no too cold. As far as we know, it is the only planet with life. Mars Mars was named for the Roman god of war. It is usually very cold on Mars. Mars is called the red planet because it is red. Jupiter Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. It is the largest planet in our solar system. Jupiter is a giant ball of gases with a rocky center. Saturn Saturn is about 888 million miles away from the Sun. It was the first known planet. It is about 10 times the size of Earth. Uranus Uranus has some thin dark ring. Uranus is mostly called the sideways planet. Uranus looks blue and green. Neptune Neptune is covered with clouds. Neptune is so far from the Sun that it is very cold. Neptune has high winds and many storms. Pluto Pluto’s journey around the Sun takes about 248.4 Earth years. A year on Pluto is about 247 Earth-years long. Any atmosphere surrounding Pluto must be frozen. I learned the planets in school. Thanks to Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Bishop.
