Nervous System The body’s primary communication system Consists of neurons Made up of 2 parts Central Nervous System (CNS) Made up of the brain and the spinal cord Spinal cord Nerves that run down the length of the back Information highway Peripheral Nervous System Nerves branching out from the spinal cord that connect CNS to the rest of the body Somatic Nervous System Part of the PNS Controls body’s skeletal muscles Voluntary behaviors Autonomic Nervous System Part of the PNS Controls the glands, and muscles of the internal organs Involuntary behaviors 2 divisions of this system Sympathetic Nervous System Arouses the body Accelerate heartbeat, slow digestion, raise blood sugar, cool you with perspiration, make you alert and ready Parasympathetic Nervous System Calms the body Conserves energy needed within the body Decrease your heartbeat, lower blood sugar, etc... Neuron A nerve cell; the basic building block of the nervous system Smallest unit of the brain Sends and receives messages throughout the body 3 kinds: Interneurons Located mainly in the CNS communicate internally and between sensory and motor neurons We have billions of interneurons Sensory Neurons Located mainly in the PNS carry incoming information from the sensory receptors to the CNS We have millions of sensory neurons Motor Neurons Located mainly in the PNS carry outgoing information from the CNS to the PNS We have millions of motor neurons
