Building Partnerships in CLIMATE CHANGE AND AIR POLLUTION Nicolas Moussiopoulos Deputy Chairman of the Governing Board International Hellenic University and Professor of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering at the Aristotle University Thessaloniki IHU Why this theme (1/2)? • Climate change is perhaps the research issue with the highest policy relevance and substantial economic implications. • Air pollution represents a severe problem especially in larger conurbations all over the world. • The linkage between climate change and air pollution is scientifically very challenging. Scale interactions IHU The interlinkages IHU Sao Paolo Collaboration with USC Mexico City Santiago IHU Why this theme (2/2)? • The International Hellenic University is already offering an MSc in Energy Systems and will soon offer two further Master programs with relevance to this theme: – Sustainable Development (with streams on Strategies and Tourism) – Environmental Technology (addressing explicitly Air Pollution) Information on IHU: http://www.ihu.edu.gr/ IHU Where do we stand now? • Some Greek Universities are among the European leaders in the specific field. • There are several examples for fruitful collaboration between research groups in Greece and the US. • Greek experts are members of networks, to which also US colleagues are contributing. • But: Synergy in teaching is rather limited. IHU Networking • Interdisciplinary networks in individual universities Example: The Sustainable Development Network of the Aristotle University (linking 9 Schools and Departments) Contact: [email protected] • National networks and centers Example: The RCE - Central Macedonia • International activities Example: The ACCENT Network of Excellence RCE - Central Macedonia Partnership Leading partner: University of Macedonia Partners: • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki • Region of Central Macedonia • YMCA, Thessaloniki • Halkidiki Hotel Association • Exporters’ Association of Northern Greece • Federation of Industries of Northern Greece (FING) Under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change Objectives Address major regional SD challenges Actively promote Education for SD at all levels Raise public awareness on key regional SD issues Develop strong links with the RCE global network Develop a regional communication network on SD issues Engage in research in collaboration with regional partners Support regional and local authorities on SD issues Disseminate research findings, experiences, knowledge and good practices Study climate change regional impacts and develop adaptation strategies Contact: Professor Eftichios Sartzetakis, [email protected] 8 Network of Excellence ACCENT (1/2) IHU 2004-2009 Greek participation: Aristotle University, University of Crete http://www.accent-network.org Network of Excellence ACCENT (2/2) IHU Greek Researsch Groups Aristotle University Thessaloniki • Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering • Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics • Environmental Pollution Control Laboratory University of Athens, Department of Applied Physics University of Crete, Environmental Chemistry Processes Laboratory University of Western Macedonia, Environmental Technology Laboratory National Observatory of Athens, Inst. of Env.
