Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences Parasitology (MLPR-201) fall 2013/2014 Dr. Hamdy Badie M. El-Wakil Prof. of Parasitology & Public Health . Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences. Pharos University In Alexandria,Egypt By the end of this lecturer students should understand the classification, pathogenicity, clinical importance and clinical features ,life cycle of Nematodes . 2- Phylum : Nemathelminthes Class : Nematodes The nematodes (round worms) are elongated, nonsegmented worms that are tapered at both ends. Unlike other helminthes, nematodes have a complete system, including a mouth, an intestine that spans most of the body length and an anus. The body is protected by a tough, noncellular cuticle. Most nematodes have separate, anatomically distinctive sexes. 4 The mode of transmission varies widely, depending on the species, and includes direct skin penetration by infections larvae, ingestion of contaminated soil, eating undercooked pork, and insect bites. The parasites can invade almost any part of the body: liver, kidneys, intestines, subcutaneous tissue, or eyes. Generally, nematodes are categorized by whether they infect the intestines as others tissues. Alternatively, they can be divided into those, for which the eggs are infectious, and those for which the larvae are infections. The most worldwide disease occurrence is ascariasis, caused by Ascaris lumbricoide 5 Phylum : Nemathelminthes (Round worms) Class : Nematoda Intestinal infections •Family : - Trichuridae e.g Trichuris trichiura (whip worm) (Trichuriasis) - Trichinellidae Trichinella spiralis (Trichinosis) Tissues infections •Ascarididae •Toxocara canis (Dog worm) (Toxocariasis) •Filariidae (Filarial worms) •(Blood & Lymphatic) •Loa loa (Loiasis) •Wuchereria bancrofti •Wuchereria malayi •(Filariasis or Elphantiasis) 6 Phylum : Nemathelminthes (Round worms) Class : Nematoda Intestinal infections •Strongylidae •Strongyloides stercoralis (Small round worm) (Strongyloidiasis) Ancylostomidae Ancylostoma duodenale Necator americanus (Old world and New world hook worms) (Hookworm diseases) Tissues infections •Dracunculidae •- Dracunculus medinensis (Guinea fire worm) (Drancunculiasis) 7 Phylum : Nemathelminthes (Round worms) Class : Nematoda Intestinal infections Ascaridae Tissues infections - Ascaris lumbricoides (Giant round worm) (Ascariasis) Oxyuridae - Enterobius vermicularis (Entrobiasis) (Oxyuriasis) Trichostrongylidae - Trichostrongylus colubriformis (Trichostrongyliasis) 8 9 10 HOOKWORMS 11 12 13 Classify Class : Nematoda ?
