LEADING A HEALTHY LIFE
Key Terms
• Infectious Diseases- caused by pathogens such as
bacteria (Ex. Polio, TB)
• Lifestyle Diseases – diseases caused partly by
unhealthy behaviors and by other factors.
HEALTH RISK FACTORS
• Risk factors – anything that increases the likelihood of
injury, disease, or other health problems.
Examples???
Controllable Risk Factors
• A risk factor that you can do something about
- Ex. Exercise regularly, avoid smoking, manage a
healthy weight, eat a well balanced diet
Uncontrollable Risk Factors
- Risk factors that can’t be changed
- Ex. Age, Race, Gender, Heredity
• 4 Major causes of Death – all Ages

* Strokes
* Respiratory Disease
• Teen Population (12-19)

- To be truly healthy, you must take care of

* Being healthy is having all these components balanced and well- if one part is
lacking, it can affect a person’s overall health
• Wellness- the achievement of a persons best in all
six components of health

1) Hereditary Influences- traits you inherit from parents
2) Social Influences- relationships you have with others
3) Cultural Influences- values, beliefs, and practices
shared by people you have common background
4) Environmental Influences- your surroundings, the
area you live, and things you have contact with
TAKING CHARGE of your

1) Knowledge- knowledge of health information needed
to make good choices about your health
Ex. Studying health, keeping up to date with current
issues
2) Lifestyle- making behavioral changes in your lifestyle
Ex. Eating, smoking, exercising
3) Attitude- a person’s way of thinking, or attitude affects
your health
Ex. Changing attitude towards stress, making the best of
a bad situation
