Chapter 1: Why Speak in Public?/A First Look at Interpersonal Communication Why we communicate the Argument Culture ethical public speaking and types of communication What public speaking does the public speaking model why we speak in public/the purposes of communication Physical Needs Identity Needs Social Needs Practical Goals Deborah Tannen’s book The Argument Culture explains individuals tend to approach people and situations with a “me against you” attitude Begin with the idea that the best way to discuss any topic is by portraying it through opposing positions, rallying to one side of the cause and attacking the other. Tannen does assert there are times when strong opposition and verbal attacks are necessary, however public speaking is just as much a public dialogue The ethical and civil exchange of ideas and opinions among communities about topics that affect the public Offer perspectives, share facts, raise questions and engage others publicly in stimulating discussion Makes us active and ethical citizens who participate in our nation’s democratic process and consider the needs of others in our communities as well as our own needs To be an ethical public speaker is to consider the moral impact of your ideas and arguments on others when you enter the public dialogue Make a list of 5 topics you might use for a speech in this class. What do you see as your strengths? your weaknesses? How could you improve these weaknesses? You will also be setting goals for this class.
