ISLAM AND EUTHANASIA
Islam does not allow euthanasia because:
 The Qur’an bans suicide and declares that no soul can die
without God’s permission.
 Muhammad said that a Muslim soldier who committed
suicide because he was dying a painful death on the
battlefield would not be allowed into heaven.
 Muslims believe life is a test from God and
so if people use euthanasia, they are cheating
in the test by trying to speed it up.

However, there are different attitudes to switching off lifesupport machines:
NO:
Some Muslims
think switching
off a life-support
machine is the
same as
euthanasia and so
they do not allow
it.
YES:
Some Muslims allow
life-support machines
to be switched off
because, recently,
Muslim lawyers have
agreed that lifesupport machines
can be switched off
when there are no
signs of life.
