MT. VESUVIUS A.D 79 by: Matt DelGreco, Alex Brown, and Dylan Bruskie Section #3 Grade 8 HISTORIAN • Vocanoes are cause by gases and buoyancy in the earth’s crust. When the gases’ pressure increases, the magma rises up and erupts out of the vocano. • When magma cools, it forms new land masses. The magma hardens after the eruption and forms new land. The American Red Cross Can Help If you live near a volcano, you should keep man emergency kit near by. Some of the things you should put in your kit are: -Food -Water -Medicine -goggles to protect your eyes -An air mask -Emergency phone numbers If you know that a volcano is going to erupt, you should evacuate. You should know the evacuation plan for your area. Don’t try to stay, because you never know how bad it can get. If you are trapped, you should try to stay inside with doors and windows closed, to try to keep ash out. Your best chance is evacuation, do what the authorities ask you to. GEOLOGIST • • Extremely high temperatures and pressure beneath the Earths crust melts rocks into a liquid form, called magma. Once magma is formed it’s always trying to make itself rise and erupt out of the chamber because the magma is less dense the rock it’s beneath. When the magma chambers are filled pressure begins to increase between the gases and liquids. Without enough pressure the volcano will most likely not erupt. Once the magma is released from the chamber and begins to flow on land it’s called “lava” which will basically destroy anything in it’s path. Eruptions from volcano’s can effect human life in a major way if enough magma is released from the volcano. Lets say a major eruption happen, when the magma is released from the chambers and begins to spread onto land it’s so hot it will burn anything. Pompeii, Italy’s volcano erupted a couple of times. A disaster occurred in Pompeii when the volcano erupted in A.D. 79, Mt. Vesuvius. When this volcano erupted 2,000 human beings were killed, without knowing the volcano had even erupted due to it was to long ago they did not have technology like we do now.
