The concept of multimedia
• Multi – many
• Media – ’something in the middle’
• Means to ’shoot’, process, distribute, store, present
and perceive information coded as
– Video, audio, animation, graphics, text,,,

Definition
• A multimedia System is characterized by
the integration of computer-controlled
handling of independent discrete and
continuous media

Continuous and Discrete media
• ’Continuous’ refers to the user’s perception of presented
time-dependent data
– Examples: Video, music, other audio, animated
graphics
• Discrete media are time-independent data
– Examples: Plain text, spreadsheet, still image, graphics

The human sensory system is usually said to have six senses:
Hearing is the sense of sound that comes into our ears.
Sight is the sense of seeing things with our eyes.
Touch is the sense of feeling things with our skin.
Taste is the sense of the flavor of things with our tongues
Smell is the sense of smelling things with our noses.
Kinesthetic sense is knowing where your whole body is and where it is
not.
• A valid seventh sense is the immune system's ability to detect invading
virus and bacteria.
