How the Web Works
Web Site – A group of related files
organized around a common topic
 Web Page – A single file within a website
which has a unique name
 Home Page – typically a websites main
page. The home page is typically
identified by either index.html or
default.html at the end of the web address


A web Browser is software that is used to
share information
 Browser allows the users to access and
understand the content on a web page
 It translates Extensible Hypertext Markup
Language (XHTML)
 Allows the user to surf or move from one
web page to another


Sites – buying and selling of
goods and services over the internet

 Portal Sites – provide a variety of goods and
services that people use every dat

Informational Sites – serve one function
providing people with useful information
 Educational Sites – provide information
about a specific school or university

allow people to share interests or news
with others

A web page is made up of individual parts
called elements
 Each element is developed individually
 Common elements include

 Text
 Graphics
 Multimedia
 Hyperlinks

Text, Graphics, and Multimedia
– words, letters, numbers and symbols
 Graphics – drawings, charts, diagrams,
paintings, photographs, and navigational
buttons
 Multimedia – audio, video and animation
 Text
Hyperlinks
Internal links connect to another page in
the same web site
 External links connect to a page on a
different web site
 Intrapage links move the user to a different
spot on the same page

Bookmarks
Allow the user to save web sites and
specific web pages for future use
 Bookmarked files are saved in folders
 Folders can also be organized to save
folders within folders called subfolders

